a mate of mine is a mechanic, he's 99% sure the cam snapping will be a direct result of something they did when fixing the head gasket.

he said the usual cause is using instant gasket instead of the genuine part, when the parts get compressed the gasket spreads out and blocks an oil journal, one part of the cam isn't getting any oil, eventually it seizes, the belt pulls the cam round and snaps it, they're very hard but quite brittle and can snap very easily under the right conditions.
