So I've just been looking at potentially swapping my car and it appears that from 1st April 2017 people with low emission cars or those having nicer cars going to have their pants down even more than we do already. According to gov.uk site no petrol or diesel car is going to have a £0 road fund licenc, or even a sub £100 one. Instead all diesel and petrol cars are going to have to pay £140/year (after the first 12 months), and those that have a car whose list price is over £40 are going to have to pay and additional £310/year, making it £450/year
So basically you're going to be penalised for having nice things, and no longer do emissions matter. Bit of a u-turn that. Also I wonder what happens if you buy a used car that once retailed at over £40000, do you pay the higher tax or do you pay the lower rate? Certainly made me rethink my next car.
