Car Tax Disk Failure

I said that would happen right from the outset, although not to that extent!

Of course you need to be really unlucky to get caught by these number plate recognition vans ( When was the last time you saw one? )
I do 1000- 1200 miles a week, and I couldn't say ...

The tax disc, could be easily spotted by a passing Community copper or a traffic warden ( do they still exist? I can't remember the last time I saw one of those either)

They are not just in vans though. There are a lot of static ANPR cameras, mostly in cities, that detect untaxed, uninsured and none MOTd vehicles.
Details are then passed on to Police to chase them so they can appear on TV.

Well I for one never go into a city, all my work is on the periphery, and if "you" live away from city's / built up area's then I guess "you" are sorted ;)

Yup same with insurance etc. Less traffic coppers, ANPR Cameras only on busy roads (can't complain about the number of cameras, we provide a lot of the background compute)

I thought all this was meant to do away with the need for ANPR cameras anyway? At least for tax purposes.

Surely if a car becomes un-taxed it should flag up on the database, automatically cross reference to check that the car hasn't been SORNed etc and then a fine issued automatically. What is the point of digitising the car tax system only to continue relying on manual detection?

Exactly!

Everything is in a single database but we'll still rely on people/tech in the street to enforce.

It explains the reason for the shortfall in revenue though doesn't it. It what point in history has the government NOT royally screwed up an IT project?

f I am able to do that then surely the DVLA must be able to as it is their computer system.
But that assumes they have the man power or the inclination ;)

I use the A11 / A14 quite a bit, I see a talivan once in a blue moon, and as above, I really can't remember how long ago it was since I saw an ANPR van.

mostly small cameras on poles or bridges these days. Quite a lot on the A11 ;)
Barton Mills seems popular.
A11 to M11 junc 9
Just saying

Don't think they are just for the police...
ANPR cameras are also operated directly by the police, the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) for the purposes of public safety and crime detection. Oh and the Highways agency anso use them for traffic flow, same detection just they use the data differently and don't record the numberplate. Theirs are green...

Careful! Years ago I was stopped on the M1 by Leicestershire police for displaying an out of date tax disc. They were very understanding, saying they knew that no one in London bought them (!) but I still got fined.

They should put it on Petrol then its fair for all imho.
Rob.
Yes, I’ve always thought that was the best way but they don’t want to hurt the gas guzzlers. The tax is particularly hard on people who have no public transport and possibly have to run 2 cars doing only low mileage commutes, ie in the countryside.

WTF? Thats outrageous :(

That has been discussed just about as long as I've been driving and I've been driving more years than I care to remember :D
I guess you could say I drive a gas guzzler, but I wouldn't object to that system.

Plenty of ANPR cameras here - they apparently cover all the major routes in/out of the city. Quite a few mobile ones as well, both in traffic and "normal" plod cars and more visible vans. The routes towards the livestock market are particularly well covered - and that's very near the heaviest concentration of car dealerships in the UK, if not the EU (so I'm told.) They used to do a LOT of Diesel dipping down there too.

To be fair, twice a week on Detling Hill.

4 in close proximity to Milton Keynes.
Ah A421 the J13 link road, so that's what they look like, I thought it was just a spy camera

No fixed cameras on A11 or A14
I spend most of my working time around the large lumpy bit off to the right of the UK it seems once you clear Cambridge, there is b****r all ...

Or perhaps you think that there is a little old lady sat in the backroom typing them out on a typewriter.
Goddammit! another myth exploded :(

You can go onto the DVLA website and enter any vehicle registration number you want and it will tell you if the vehicle is taxed or SORN. It will also give you the full MOT history of any vehicle.
If I am able to do that then surely the DVLA must be able to as it is their computer system.
They're to busy chasing sheep.

They do, plenty of upset people complain of getting done for no tax after forgetting to renew over on Pepipoo. It’s £85 fine on top of the tax iirc.

ANPR cameras don't catch the bad people.

Buy a car for cash and give a false name and address ( that exist)
Don't insure it
Don't tax it
Don't MOT it

Drive it until you ( by some freak chance) get physically pulled over then you can probably convince them to give you a producer

Sell car for spares

Buy another car and repeat...

I'd hazard a guess that if someone was pulled over with no tax, insurance or MOT, the car would be impounded. No-one would be getting that car back again. It'll likely be crushed.

That would explain the 15 year old kids round here driving about in £50 bangers.

You need to visit N Lincs Cobra, we have them everywhere ANPR vans and speed vans......all operated by safer roads humber, not the police.

That only works if the car is properly registered to the owner.

As I understand it these days its a private company(s) that does this now, including the speed awareness courses.
The last one I saw in Norfolk, had no "police" on it. It was still in the same colours though.

Speed cameras are a proper money making rachet, if you get caught here at less than the 10% + 1mph you still get done over, a mate has just been fined for 44 in a 40 zone I thought it was 40 + 5 + 1 = 46 before an auto fine

What the BBC article doesn't say is how much money has been made from automated fines.

The 10% + 2mph thing was ACPO guidelines, not statute law. They can prosecute for 1mph over if they want to.

They can prosecute for 1mph over if they want to
Although this is a couple of years old now, and I don't think it was ever implemented. ( not yet anyway)

All drivers who travel at more than 70 miles per hour on the motorway face being fined under radical new proposals being considered.
Olly Martins, the Police and Crime Commissioner for the region, said he hoped the scheme would be up and running by April next year, and would generate up to a million pounds for his cash strapped force.

.......................

Olly Martins sparked outrage last week after he threatened to switch on speed cameras permanently in a bid to raise £1million to cover a budget gap.
He said at the time: “I’m now looking at increasing what we raise by maxing out on the speed cameras on the M1.

What do you base that assertion on?

And how has that changed with the new tax system? those sort of people have been doing that forever.

Absolutely no chance of that happening...
