Hi all,

I am looking for a head unit with ipod integration. Speed of operation is key - i have alot of music on my ipod, and the old ipod head unit i had was dreadfully slow.

Bonus if it also has line in / usb plug.

up to £300

Hi Alan, whats it like for browsing speed when looking through aartists / albums etc?

very fast - i have about 35gb of music on my iphone.

you can also use 'q search' or something - pressing the search button twice brings up alphabet search where you can skip through the letters a, b, c etc then drill down.

the 2x usb ports are on the back - i have connected an ordinary ipod dock cable to one and routed into the cubby below the ashtray so i can plug in easily - plus it charges. the other usb i have used the included usb extension cable and routed this into the cubby beside the ignition so that i can plug in tomtom to charge or a usb embory stick with music loaded.

there is a 3.5mm line in on the front panel and an sd slot and cd (what are those?) behind it

looks good. also like the look of the cd-less alpines. off to the shop tomorrow - pay day!

for example a song or artist starting with F - rather than scrolling through all the a's then the b's then the c's to get to F (like i had to do in my MINI and also in the Golf I had - both had built in ipod control), you simply press the search button twice and scroll through the alphabet to F, then press enter and scroll through the F's to the song or artist you want.

the media deck alpines are ok - but i felt that because you can only remove the control buttons and not the display that it was not as secure as removing the whole panel on the pioneer. basically half the front panel stays in the car on show.

that may make a difference...
one thing i like about having a standard head unit is its lack of appeal to thieves. one reason i was looking at the parrot also, but the car stereo shop near my work was not keen on giving a decent demo, put me off a little.

I had exactly the same thought process and looked at the parott too.

They look neat but don't get good write ups for reliability and they are also cumbersome in action too. The other thing i read is that the parrot has its own internal amplifier and it's not very loud.

I saw one in the flesh and the thing felt very flimsy

Well, spent the weekend brosing and settled on this pioneer for the ability to use spotify. Then when checking the tech specs notice it doesnt have rear usb connector!! Really. Boo

Mine does - 2 infact
Hi Ian,

was quite interested in the cdless pioneers for their ability to play spotify, but will take up your suggestion in the absence of rear usb inputs in those models.

Just ordering now on amazon.

Had it for about 6 weeks now, great for the money. Cheers Alan.

Still dont get why the Pioneer's have no rear usb inputs?

I have an Alpine IDA x-305s linky and its the best one I've used for iPod control to date.

Nice and fast scrolling, you can skip through in bulk and i have a good 100gig of music on my iPod and it doesn't take long at all. Only problem is it doesn't have a AUX in or CD deck. I'm sure there would be one about that now has a line in.

You should try the above Panasonic. Very fast scrolling, 2 rear usb inputs, sd card and front aux in and cd deck.

The pioneer you mean?

It looks good, when i bought mine a couple of years back i was looking at Pioneers also, I only went for Alpine because of friends recommendations. I wont be changing mine for a while yet
