Booked my car in for a full service and MOT later in the week and was wondering if there were any tips on checking whether all the work as been completed/checked,tyre pressures,balancing,battery levels,filters,etc (without resorting to getting my hands dirty :D)
Usually,the only visual signs are normally greased terminals and door hinges
Won't mention who's doing the work,as that will generate a thread on its own I'm guessing :p

Go to a garage you trust would be my advice.
I have absolutely no qualms about my local independent garage, he does what he says he will, asks if he finds anything else and doesn't charge the earth.
 
if your that bothered about checking whether the work has been done, mark service items (filters etc) with an UV security pen, then you can check if the item has been changed.


although i do recommend going to a decent, trusted garage in the first place for a service and not just ATS for 'oil change for £9.99'
 
You can ask to have any replaced parts/service items returned to you, but even that isn't proof positive that the work has been done, unless you have previously marked the items to be replaced so that they are readily identifiable.
 
Put a small dab of car paint across the parts that should be worked on, making a seal that would have to break when the parts are checked/replaced.

Another way to do it is to let the tyres down a bit, drain the screenwash and generally make sure it's in a condition where they'll have to do the work :lol:

Depends on the make of car, but with mine I take it to the dealers and pay the extra - here in Germany there's very little difference in a dealer service and an independent - but we always take our own oil - everyone charges double the cost for an oil change...lol

If you use an independent, I would buy your own fluids and tell them to use those...that way you get fluids replaced according to spec...
 
why do you think these chains offer a free MOT(failure) I wouldn't let them service a wheelbarrow
one of the watchdog type programmes got a reporter into Apples Car Clinic a few years ago, they were a right bunch of cowboys, the manager admitted on hidden camera they'd never changed anyones brake fluid as they'll never know.

They went bust soon after, i've taken punctured tyres to chains to be told it can't be repaired i'll have to buy a new one, take it to an independant yes that's fine it's nowhere near the edge.

Find a proper mechanic, these places only have fitters that know how to change oil and fit brake pads, as soon as you have a real fault they won't have a clue
