Yes
I'm doing some overtime at work to get my car serviced.....

BUT.....

I'm after a wide angle lens....:D

Never the twain shall meet...

Your wish is my command.

Service the Car, Murphys law says if you don't it will go on the fritz!

(Just don't take it to Halfords, will need more doing when it gets back)

And without the car you won't be able to go out and use the kit you do have!

Oil change, filters and sparks? - DIY mate..

Get the lens.....it is a photo forum afterall ;-)

Depends on whether the car needs a full or interim service. If full service then the car comes first. If only an interim and if it's a Ford have one of their £99 value services. Car gets oil and filter changed, everything gets checked over thoroughly and you'll probably still have enough money for a new lens or at least be very close to getting one.

Both!!

DIY service is very easy, oil, filter, air filter, plugs, fuel filter and check around. A couple of hours work with a socket set and money you saved put it towards new lens. Keep you receipts and fill in the service log book to say what and when you did the service.

Unless your car is less than 3 years old then it needs to go to the dealer to keep your stamp, other wise they just get picked if you make a claim.

£99 = "value"

I normally pay about £60 for a normal service and £120 for a full service - there is no way I would ever use a main dealer.

no it doesn't need to go the dealer... Block exemption means you can take it pretty much anywhere as long as it uses parts of an "OE Quality"

Go on Neil, get your hands dirty and service the car yourself, then you can get the lens with a clear conscience. Good luck mate.

true.... or like others DIY if possible if not get it serviced then get the lens at a later date - as you wont be able to get out an about to use it....

Go with new lens, and service the car your self for about £20. Assuming the car ha been serviced in the last 2 years and isn't high performance of a classic all you need to do is change filters and oil. So warm the engine, pull the sump plug and drain the oil, google your make and model and "oil filter location" pull it off (if its stiff just ram a screwdriver through the side and use that as a lever) go to Halfords or any motor factor (small local ones are better as they are cheaper and offer good advice) and buy some oil (check its the right type) and a new oil filter and air filter. fill your new oil filter with new oil and attach it to where it goes, screw it on hand tight. put the appropriate amount of oil in the engine (check on dip stick) put a new air filter in. check your bulbs, tyre pressures, other fluids. Give car a wash and enjoy you new lens!

Diy if you can most garages are a rip off I service my scooby on my own oil filters spark plugs fuel filters save a fortune :D although I think I'll need a clutch soon at least 500 can't do that myself though :(

I think we need to know which car. Mine goes to a specialist indy for servicing because it's easier for someone with the specialised kit (and some bits are really fiddly) and it's necessary should I ever have to part with it.

Get the lens, you know you want to - OK, the car will probably break down, but then you'll have to walk with your camera and new lens which will make you happy and healthy. :)

Both! Just booked my car in for a service. £310!!! It hasn't been done for about 2 years mind.

And I bought the wide angle lens I wanted last week.

Buy the lens and walk!

Seriously i would get the car serviced, but if you can do it yourself or find a local garage you might save a few quid:)

Both, diy the service and shop till you drop. You'll need to get Meehaja to tell us the place to go for parts though, I can't buy them for that price anywhere.
What lens are you after.?

Agree unless its still under warrenty when it will need to be done by a garage:)

do you need your car to get to the place where you take pix?

DIY mate - do it for £60 odd quid .. its what im doing this month ;)

Take the car to a garage and get it serviced. Use an idependent and save some money towards the lens.
At least they will check everything and not just the basics. (or at least they should!)

Depends on the car...... I love my Cupra R more than my camera gear

Service the car yourself (garages are a rip-off) and buy your lens as a reward to yourself

Service first. I hate to be practical, guys, but an unserviced car can kill you. An old lens won't.

Bit like saying get a mate to take your photos, cos pro toggers just rip you off. :D
There is more to a major service than changing the oil and filter. If the garage do a proper service.
I remember a guy servicing his own car and crashing two days later. He had missed a bleb in his osf brake hose and it gave way. Because like most, he thought a service just covered the basics that a lot of people have already quoted on here.
Anyone remember this story? Ok he wasn't just servicing it, but he thought he knew what he was doing.
As we say in the trade, "everyones an expert".

Hmmm.....

Most services are simply oil and filter changes.

Services don't include work on brakes and tyres athough issues here could be highlighted.

If you can't tell if your brakes or tyres need done by a visual inspection yourself you shouldn't be on the road IMO. A year or 12000miles is a long time till your next service.

Ive never heard of an unserviced car killing anyone, an unroadworthy car is another story.

It’s hard to find a good garage these days.

I used to get services and a like done at both main dealers and independents but I have had lots of bad experiences. Parts fitted incorrectly, tools left in the engine bay, wheel nuts not torqued and even worse charging for parts and labour to fit items that aren’t even on the car. Most main dealers are over £110 per hour my way and you still seem to get the apprentice working on your car.

Yes there are good and bad garages but it’s hard to find a good one.

I'm a mechanical engineer by trade so 90% of the service work is quite easy it’s normally check or replace. It is getting harder to do some work as you need laptops and software to do more and more things. But If you DIY at least you know the work has been done.

I don’t like the new long life services either it’s not good to have oil in your car for 20,000 miles even if it is full synthetic. it seams like just a way to charge you more for your service even know there is normaly very little extra work.

VW are the best for charging, full service £320 plus brake oil change £55 plus cooling water change £55 and every 50,000 £500 for a cambelt and water pump.

A proper service includes the whole car not the engine, Tyres, brakes, etc. Unfortunately at most garages all you seem to get is an expensive oil change using oil worse than chip fat.
