Car registration query

Hi all, I am considering purchasing a second hand van from our local garage. I just phoned the insurance company I use for a quote and the registration plate is not showing up on their database, should I be wary? Are there any websites where I can check for myself. Its a 2012 vehicle so surely it should show up on the database ( I am assuming there is a national vehicle database).

Are you sure its not just the trade plates?

Did you definitely copy it down correctly?

Personally, I'd just give the garage a quick ring and ask them about it

I have confirmed the number plate with the garage before I started on the insurance quote. I tried my existing vehicle number plate through the DVLA system and it's not showing up either. I am clearly doing something wrong.
