Just a quick question - I'm interested in getting one of a few private plates for a pending new car but I think they may all be taken up. Is there any way to get hold of the owners at all. My surname is WHISTON so have been looking for any of the following:

WH12 TON
WH13 TON
WH14 TON

Anyone had any experience with this sort of thing or have any suggestions?

Don't think you'll have any luck tracing the owners. You could wait just over a year and try for WH15TON though. Contact the dvla, you may be able to reserve it.
Or I've found a few plates similar. http://www.plates4less.co.uk/private-number-plates/WHISTON/
If you find a plate you like amongst them, it's wise to check DVLA website as well as they sometimes still have the plate and sell it cheaper than some brokers.

Even if you can trace the owners, it is entirely possible that the plates are on vehicles as standard plates - not private ones.

WH is (I think) a local indicator here, I'll try to remember to keep an eye open. Since it appears that 2 of the numbers are on LandRovers of some description, it might be worth contacting Devon based LR dealers to see if they can give your details to the owners.

Not thought of that. I've had a look on the DVLA site and I think you're right. WH seems to be West of England (Exeter, Truro & Bristol). I reckon there will be plenty of dealers to sort through though.

To get WH15TON you'd need to buy a new car, I don't think they let you put a new plate on an older car.

I'm afraid I only know the Exeter one who are Matford LandRover but I reckon a look at the LR official site will tell you the main dealers. Loads of LR magazines in which independents may advertise. TBH, I reckon the DVLA are probably the best bet, especially for WH 15 TON!

I have a new car on order for the 14 plate in March so unfortunately I can't use a plate any newer than that. That's why I'm looking for the 12 and 13 plates.

You can put an older year plate on a newer year car but you are not allowed to put a plate on a car that relates to a newer year than the date of the first registration of the car.

Why would he want to - as he says a couple of posts up from yours, the car will be a March 2014 so a 15 plate can't be put on a 14 car.
Think you'll find he posted the purchase date after my post not before.

Well the 15 plate would be a much better plate considering his name he could buy it speculatively in the expectation that at some point he will have a car to put it onto

I've sent some requests off to some of the local Landrover dealers to see if they have any on their books etc and asked if they will pass on my details to anyone. Don't think there's much more I can do unfortunately.

I have thought of this but the car I'm getting in March we have to last me for about 4 years so not sure of the costs to retain each year.

£155 for 3 years

If there's anyone in your immediate family planning on a new car in '15, maybe they'll be happy to borrow the plate until such time as you're ready for it?

Think you'll find you should read my post properly - I wasn't quoting you
My mistake. I was on my phone and the name on quoted posts is obscured by Christmas decorations. I thought it was my post you'd quoted.
