Hi

A mate has bought a newish Black car and there are some fine scratches on the bonnet, what is the best item to polish the bonnet with to remove the fine white scratches.

Thank you

Kev

Best to have put this in the car cleaning thread. Anyway, run fingernail over scratch (preferably in a plastic sandwich bag to enhance the effect). If you can feel the bumps, it'll need a respray.

If not, buy a car polish and applicator pads. For something from halfords, Autoglym UDS was supposed to be good for dark cars. Alternatively, get a pro detailer to machine polish the car.

Thank you Sir,

Did not know there was a car cleaning thread.

Will pass the information on.

Not necessarily, the edges of the paint either side of the scratch could just be raised.

Poorboys do a range of scratch removers, different grades depending on how fine or deep the scratches are. SSR1 being the finest grade. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Poorboys-SSR-Super-Swirl-Remover/dp/B004ZLARCQ

If it's fine swirl marks, they are more prone to show up on darker paint jobs. Removal by hand will be hard work, an orbital polisher is likely going to make life easier. To be honest though a pro detailers would be the better/safer option although may not be cheap.

Don't use a car wash in future, they cause a lot of fine swirl/scratch marks, prevention is best approach, hand wash two bucket method with micro fibre wash mitt and drying cloths.

I used the Poorboys by hand on a metallic black car, the scratch / swirl mark removal was no harder than cleaning a car. I had a 10mm wide by about 50mm long scuff on the corner of my bumper where someone had scraped it, A couple of minutes with the Poorboys SSR 2 and the mark was gone. The stuff can also be used to get marks off polycarbonate headlight lenses and also the shiny black plastic trim usually found on door pillars.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

They are not swirl marks, look like some has dragged a bag or something across the bonnet. They don't look deep but you can see them.

T-Cut may even be enough to remove the marks.

If they're just very fine "there" scratches rather than a actual scratch then a good polish will help.

Autoglym Super Resin Polish works well, they also do an Ultra Deep Shine polish.

I've used the SRP for a number of years and it has worked very well for me, can take some time and effort to remove, but can work.

Meguiars also do a new tec Ultimate compound which seems to get good results / reviews - perhaps try a good polish first and if not, then something like this, followed by a polish...

Farecia 3G also do a scratch remover - again gets good reviews, so another option...

If he's not confident at all, then have a local detailed look at / quote for looking at sorting it out...

Given your subsequent description I would +1 the poorboys......Autoglym SRP will be easier to get though as halfords sell it, also might be worth using as a general polish in the wash regime plus other products.

Have you used 1 and 2 ?

Just wondering what the differences in grade were - I'm considering trying some as it can be used on gel coats and I've a few marks I want to try to get out...

Cheers

1 would be best used on swirl marks. 2 would be for slightly heavier marks. If memory serves me correctly there is a 1.5, a 2.5 and a 3 as well. If the paint or coating is soft it maybe advisable to go for the lighter grades.

Cheers, I think (could be wrong) that Gel Coat is supposed to be quite hard , will have a look re the .5 versions, but I know Amazon do the 1, 2 or 3 versions...
