My missus bought herself a used BMW Z4 last year from an independent used car sales. Today, the electric roof has failed.
In the service books, there is a receipt from the previous roof motor replacement which was less than 12 months ago. This was by the previous owner through a local Toyota franchise garage. Does this mean that as its failed within 12 months, she is entitled to any investigative work and replacement if necessary? Also, does she report this to the garage she bought the car from, or to the garage that did the previous work? Or is she s*** out of luck as ownership has changed in the last 12 months?

I'd have said the garage she bought from has responsibility to her, if there's any claim on the previous work it's up to them to chase it.

If it is an earlier z4 then they have a well known fault with the roof motor as its in a place that gets filled with water and drowns the motor. If the compartment is full of water then it's a common fault. Later cars have drain holes.

Start with the used car dealer. If its more than 6 months since purchase it's a harder job to get repairs. They may think they can get other Toyota garage to sort it instead of them so they might help.

What warranty did she get with the car when she bought it - if it's still within that warranty period, then I'd go back to the garage and request they sort this out...

It maybe worth if not, seeking advice from the dealer that fixed it previously, but they may only honour the warranty to the original person and the repair may well only have a 6 month warranty on it...

Hopefully you get it sorted one way or the other :)

The warranty on the car was only 3 months. Ive heard about the common water problem as read up on it earlier. The garage that did the previous motor change is a very reputable local garage so hoping they will honour the work. There is literally only 4 weeks left until 12 months expires.

In that case, I think I'd be tempted to go straight to them and see if you get any joy with them ...

Hope you get it sorted

Sometimes warranties extend only to original purchaser, read the small print.

If it's a known fault with the car rather than the actual motor, you may well struggle to get a good response, they may well get it done at a reduced price as a goodwill gesture if you intend to continue using them for servicing and other repairs when needed though.
Would it not just be easier to buy a new motor yourself and fit it yourself and whilst you are at it find if there is a solution to the obvious drainage problem.

How old is the Z4?

The reason I ask is that some manufacturers, with a bit of effort on your part, will pay for the part at least. It's happened twice with me and Honda and both vehicles were well outside the warranty period. They paid for the replacement stator on my bike (at the time 5 years old) and, as of today, paid for both rear wheel bearings including all the labour on my wifes 6 year old CRZ. The issue with the bikes stator was a well known one with that particular engine.

Might be worth a punt if you get no joy with the Toyota dealership
