Car is in the garage. Having its Mot.....

Good luck. I had MOTs on my "every day" car and my van last month. £932 for the car, £513 for the van (and I'm sure they undercharged me for the van, they had it three days doing welding and other stuff and charged me for 2 hours labour).

So that'll be 2 new front springs then, Matt

My dad's Corsa has had at least one new front or rear spring at ever one of it's MOTs, mine had 2 sets of fronts over 3 MOTs....

rear brake compensator valve seased

Design fault! They shouldn't put the engine in the front and absolutely no weight in the back when the car is empty, then they wouldn't need a compensator valve at all ;). Has happend on my parents cars as well, starting with the Talbot Horizon they had in the dim and distant past, although that siezed in the "fully laden" position, so it locked the rears all the time .

Never used to get compensator valves on RWD cars ...

rear springs

and

rear brake compensator valve seased

pretty much the 2 guaranteed fails on every corsa

other than that small amount of welding is the only other thing that genrally goes on them

CV joint boots (on the "C", not so sure about Matt's "B") and handbrake cables (ditto), that's all I've ver had to replace on any of the Corsas I've had...

Pffft, try owning a classic mini - MOT time is the most stressful time of the year! My last MOT required most of the underside to be welded back together and patched up, the inner wing stitched back together, some electrics tweaked, the engine tuned to pass emissions, slightly leaky brake slave cylinders replaced plus a whole bundle of other small things! Ah the joys of old cars and their previous owners

At least you can get panels for them when they need welding ;). Try owning a Hillman Imp. At least mine is 1968 so only needs the "visible smoke" emissions test, which is handy as the cam is so wild that it would never pass the unburned hydrocarbons part.

I did, several....at least you can do an engine swap, on your own without even needing a trolley jack, in under an hour with one of those, not the 5 hours you need with a Mini

Would it not be easier, cheaper and less stressful to buy a different car

Hope it does not need too much replacing.

Where's the fun in that?

OK, less fun when you have to pay someone else to fix stuff...

Drum roll please.............

It failed :(

Bulbs and emissions and snapped handbrake cable. Ah well.

The mechanic even siad when I phoned him 'it failed but we knew that anyway, didnt we':lol::lol::lol:

Well it could have been worse - only thing that really worries me is how you did not know the handbrake cable had snapped......

No idea about that car, but often there are two (one for each rear wheel) and if one fails the other still works and will hold the car on a hill.

I suspect the OP has been doing too many handbrake turns :p

Didn't you give the car at least a quick once over before it went in to make sure all the lights/horn/handbrake were working? :shake:

But even then I would have thought there would be a cable dangling if you looked underneath - or am I the only person stupid enough to look under the car once a week or so  best not to answer that!!

Right.

I did know about the handbrake cable being snapped (obivously as it went with one hell of a bang) (and i did it parking up, not being a tit) but I thought the garage would have fixed that before they did the MOT as I asked them to  Been snapped since wednesday so had to park it in gear.

When I go and pick the car up, I am going to as about the bulbs as the headlights, indicators and brakes work. The only thing I can think of is the sidelights as I never use them!
