Last year cost me £196.00

It's due again at the end of the month, so I've gone through the hoops on the Hastings Direct Website and it's coming up with a renewal cost of £388!!!! - nearly double?

Compare the market gives me the cheapest as £245!

What's going on? A year old, now 46, no claims of over 10 years, the car being insured is the same as last year and now a year older, 13 plate Honda Civic, yet it looks like the cost to insure has gone up yet again!

Blame people who live on flood plains and beside pretty rivers. We swapped to Admiral (IIRC!) for our cars and for all 3, it's cheaper than the renewal quote for just mine... Similarly with my bikes - cheaper for 2 with S*ga (now I'm an old fart!) than through Bennetts for 1.

Try a broker, I've never found any of the online price comparison websites to be cheaper than my broker.

I'm with Hastings and I got my renewal through and it had gone up by about £40 from last year to £311.
I just rang them up had a nice chat and they chopped £30 straight off down to £280.

Give them a call, insurance is going up though as folk say.

I had a small accident last June and I didn't claim but my insurance went from £320 fc to £1130 so I went onto compare and got the next year for £380! I phoned current insurers and he said they loaded it cos they don't like dirty drivers! WTF?

Insurance companies ... grrrr

We have a little zoom, zoom Mazda 2 and last year protected no claims and fully comp ... under £150!! :) After a few years they just up the premium for no reason whatsoever (no accidents/claims/speeding for us since computers came along) and that's when we move along.

It's often worth phoning the companies BEFORE you go to a comparison site as they have no idea what sort of premium you've been offered. You then tell them it's too much and they soon find something to lower the premium!

Oh - and if looking, enter female details then change to male details - they're meant to be the same but last time I looked ... yep, you guessed!

Mine goes up every year with Hastings Essential....I went to their website and got a new quote and it was cheaper. I rang them up when I renewed my insurance and they went with that quote :) It was a little more than what was quoted on the website, but it's still cheaper than what this years quote was.

Now I'm looking at volunteering, I may have to get the occasional business 'mileage' on my insurance :/

Different companies have different views as to what is "profitable" for them, if you move out of that zone due to age, location, car, occupation or whatever, then they just quote a higher price until you go elsewhere.

Sure, I know it always pays to shop around and I do - I was just shocked that it was DOUBLE!! - I'm hopeful with haggling I can get it down to ~ £230 - which although more than last year, I'll just have to accept everyone's seems to be going up :(

Jeff, try Wye on 01629 814840 - I've been using them for over 20 years and I've never found a better value quote

I really can't understand this quest for ever cheaper insurance quotes, often followed by complaints that when you need to claim things don't go well.
I've been with Direct Line for years now for car/house & when I had them my dogs.
Not the cheapest but any claims were always paid without any problems, both my kids had claims on their motor insurance with
Direct Line and were paid out instantly

Its not "ever cheaper" we want really though is it. It's just "not £200 more than it was last year even though my circumstances are all exactly the same excepting that the cars now a year older and therefore worth less".
If my renewal came through and it was £5 or £10 more I wouldnt hesitate to just renew. £140 or whatever more, no sorry, get to f***. (The insurers, not you!)

Rip off Britain again, along with "line rental" charges, gas and electric prices, mobile phone contracts/prices. And many more. At least petrol's relatively cheap at the moment.

That's why I specifically referred to value. I've found cheaper - but always at the expense of customer service.

I pretty much challenge everything to a degree. Sometimes even if I am happy with the price its worth a grumble. All the numbers are free to call from my mobile so I will just sit in the office on a break and try my luck. This year Virgin media down from £35 to £24 a month, AA full (everything) cover for me and the wife renewal was £228, all in for £188 I think. I even bleated to boiler cover people about their prices and got £3/month off.

its all better in my pocket to buy film :)

On my list to do this month is also switch energy suppliers from EDF

Also don't forget cash back sites.....After cash back my VW Golf R 370Hp pocket rocket came out at £136 fully comprehensive with just £150 excess. But ultimately it is one of lives little mysteries.....The same insurer quoted nearly a grand for our Mercedes GL, whilst with Hastings it was just £280. I've given up trying to understand why...

And you're a year older and people that age might be more likely to claim, and there might have been an increase in claims based for your postcode or occupation, and there might have been an increase in claims for your model of car etc etc. Value of your own car has very little do it with it really.

Loads and loads of factors are used to make up your insurance quote, only a very small % of insurance premiums are actually profit after business expenses and claims costs are taken into account.

New business is an almost no profit venture, Insurance like many other companies rely on the people who just let the insurance roll and auto renew pay the price as they are way to busy to do the ring round.

As more and more are doing the ring round come renewal they have to change the model.......Juts call and push the price down or move on. I got ours to 20 quid more than previous year but on two new cars.

we had our Admiral multi car renewal through this week. up £84 on last year (no claims/convictions).

annoying thing is that doing an online quote as a new customer it drops by £60 even with a few bits added on.

there is no benefit for loyal customers, its ridiculous.

Phone them, Neil. Tell them you've had a better quote and see if they'll match it.

I changed from Hasting to Direct line, last year to save a few quid.

Renewal came through this morn & it's increased from £302 to £375 (n)

Compared online then rang them.

5 minute call & reduced to £330 (inc less excess) (y)

I wouldn't use Hastings if they were the only insurance company about - I'd rather not have a car they are that bad.

I was once took a motor policy out with them. They sent all my details to someone else who kindly rang me up as they had all my details. Anyway, they returned my policy paperwork back to Hastings. About 3 was later I rang them to see where my paperwork was and they blamed the Royal Mail. I explained that they sent all my paperwork to someone else but this other person had returned them to Hastings. They then checked and said, yes because you returned paperwork we cancelled the policy. I replied that it wasn't me but the other person who returned the documents. Anyway, this conversation went on for a while and I asked that they reinstate my policy. Yes, that would be fine however the policy had now gone up by £50. I said it was their mistake so they can pick up the cost. They didn't accept that it was their mistake. Another hour or so later we somehow came to a compromise so I was insured to drive home.

At renewal time, got a text. Replied saying NO. Rang them and told them NO. Stopped DD and took out a policy elsewhere. Hastings docs turned up in the post then a week or so later a letter threatening legal action of non payment plus reporting me to the police for having no insurance (which I did but elsewhere).

Don't go anywhere near them. I'd hate to think what they are like at settling a claim!

I can field that one - the word is useless. Dad was with them when he was rear ended. Took an age to sort out, everything seems to be dealt with by one of those third party claims management type companies that don't actually manage anything leaving you to do all the chasing around. Eventually sorted (car was written off) and Hastings will be avoided in future. One positive though, they paid out more than was paid for the car, but that's because it was bought cheap in the first place not their generosity!

I don't expect cheaper cheaper cheaper.
I do expect though that they don't take the p155.

All the talk of cars over the last couple of days has had me searching for something with a little more poke. I've just done a insurance search and had a bit of a shock.

I'm driving around in the slowest car I've ever had, a 1.6 ford cmax. Its under 100 bhp, 0-60 speeds of about 13secs. insurance was £255 fully comp value £4000. I just searched for a fiesta a st-3 mountune at double the cost £8k. It has 215bhp in a weenie car with a 0-60 time under 7 secs fully comp just £287 with the same insurers!

Where is the logic in that? and why am I driving this s***!?

just re-done mine ,been with axa for two years but they wanted £100 + this year ,got other quotes from go compare etc but all still expensive ,then out of the blue got a letter through the door from RIAS even cheaper than last years axa policy ,plus enhanced benefits and protection claims etc .just gone with them and very efficient seems to be the best way to describe them .

Totally agree.. My Dad always said, there's no such thing as cheap tyres, brakes ........... & insurance.

Thing is, I don't necessarily mind the odd £10 increase, but it pees me off when they decide to increase by 20+% for no obvious reason.
It's just become part of what we all have to do now every year.

A facebook post came up today from Sky Insurance - 7 Performance cars for under £500 to insure. I'll take an S2000 please!

http://www.skyinsurance.co.uk/blog/2016/02/the-top-7-performance-cars-to-insure-for-under-500/

Not sure if Mrs Nod's is classed as a performance car - it's restricted to 155 MPH and mine isn't that quick at 137 (IIRC from the bumf) but those 2 and the s***box (Clio 1.2) cost a touch under £300. The joys of being older!!! (One of the very few!)

Mine's still got it's Japanese clocks in so is limited to 112. I haven't tried to verify this yet, the handling is somewhat interesting under power! (if you imagine an MX5 as dancing with one of those skinny young things of strictly then the FTO is like waltzing with a wardrobe in comparison)

I have noticed it doesn't pay to be loyal to insurance companies, if you don't haggle and shop around, they just auto-renew and rip us off.

I went with Swintons this year, paid less than last year and have a £50 cash-back next month, plus cash back on our house insurance and our contents insurance.

When shopping around online for insurance also try looking at going through cashback sites such as Quidco or Topcashback beforehand that might help to combat the price increase by getting some cashback ( although not guaranteed usually i have no problems getting my cashback )

My VW Golf R was £136 fully comp. Then £11.70 additional for the modifications. My cheapest insurance ever :)

Intrigued to know where you can get a Fiesta ST3 for £8k. £18k would be closer. If you can get one for £8k and it's sound, not crash repaired etc. I'd snap it up if I were you, it's a bargain.

I guess it is an ST-2, the 3's seem to be around £14K

Any latest model Fiesta ST for £8k will be a bargain, even the "basic" ST. Unless it's got mega miles, crash repaired or there is something wrong with it. There's an ST on ebay for £7995, needs a new engine, don't think it was an ST3 though. Even old model 2007/8 Fiesta ST's go for around £6k and the current one has only been around 3yrs or so.
