Car insurance

Now read what I have written in the context of the scenario where the named driver may live at the other end of the country and is being put on the insurance to lower the insurance of a new to be insured driver who faces a very large premium. Now put that into the mix and ask what possible benefit to either side of that "named" driver gives to the risk Assessment?

It still does not matter if the named driver lives at the other end of the country, nor does the named driver ever have to drive the car they are insured on. Provided truthful and complete information is given on the proposal then it is not fronting.

The benefit to the named driver in the scenario you outline is that they can drive the with the insured's fully comp insurance should the need arise, rather than relying on their own "driving other cars" provision (if their policy offers it) which will be third party only.

I am a named driver on a car that is owned by someone that lives 120 miles away. I very much doubt the insurer will be concerned that I have not driven the car this year should the owner make a claim. Indeed, I am certain of it.

When you add the named driver then you need to disclose details about them INCLUDING THEIR ADDRESS. If the insurance company have an issue with this being a long way from the primary driver then they will refuse to accept them as a named driver.
If they accept the details given then it forms part of the insurance contract and everyone is happy.

Absolutely

It's the Newcastle Brown for me tonight - cheers! :)

Definitely worth shopping around and trying all the comparison sites, even if your last quote seems reasonable. It could be that the insurance co have had a number of claims for a particular area, so your particular postcode then becomes undesirable in their eyes and the premiums go up.

I'm lucky enough to be an old geezer and qualify for Saga car insurance. Mucho cheapo renewal quote this year, £100 cheaper than Direct Line, who were already cheap for me :-)

I got quotes with Saga but they did not match the Aviva quote. In the end I bundled the group of cars we have as a family. Fully listed. All fine with full details to the insuer.

I recently got 'motorcycle' cover, fully comp for a 200cc, 3 year NCB with £100 excess at only £87 for the year. I'd also got quotes at up to £375 and one for £515 for the same cover elsewhere. I tried again with using different vehicle details and no NCB and the same prices came up for the same insurers. They obviously didn't want my business for some reason.

James (OP), have you tried looking again with a different vehicle (lower insurance class) and see if the same prices come up. That way you'll know it's not 'personal' towards you, it may be the post code area or something similar that causes the price hike.

I don't really have a choice of car, and I don't "mind" (read that as I'll have to if I want to drive) mind paying a £1000 premium with the cheapest insurers which are Admiral, and I know that my postcode will have an effect on the Insurance, but I don't have choice about where I live until next year anyway.

I just think the whole insurance thing is a joke. I was around my parents last night and with Dad being ill my Mum is going to have to do the driving for both of them so I was getting a quote for my mum to be the main driver on the Fiat and the new mini they are getting. Came to around £300 - 400 for either of those cars, a fraction of what I'll have to pay, she's had her license for over 40 years, never had a car insured in her own name so no NCBs, but she does have an SP30 that's 2 years old. She barely drives, and is quite frankly a poorer driver than me. Me and my dad were discussing that I was the better driver, she pipes up to me "Well you've never really seen me drive" to which my Dad replies "Neither have I!"

I understand insurance is all done by statistics but it's grating that I'm effectively considered 3 times the risk that my mother is and she's not driven more than 10 miles in the last year!

She might find that if she tells her insurers that her past year's driving experience is that little that her premium goes up a bit.

But on the other hand I bet they wouldn't reduce my premium if I told them I've drove a good (35-40%) proportion of the miles done by my parents cars in the 3 years since I passed my test, and have had no incidents......

It just all seems a con, but a con I'm going to have to go along with unfortunately.

Con - perhaps. A business based on risk - yes. A legal requirement - totally.

Put that in the mixer and you get all the fog of what the clients - us, rarely understand the multitude of get out clauses they use to deny even the clearest of claims.

As said earlier - be open and honest lest the day comes when you need them on your side.
