OK I have never had a car with the digital info on dashboard before... all the fuel consumption stuff.. date/time and other.. also the outside temprature..(i have two cars with this now) . well yesterday one of them BEEPED and the temp came on "+ 3.0 *c" and when i restarted car it was on when the default should be miles left in tank... seems to have gone back OK now

as this only happened when very cold outside.. is it some sort of warning ..seems a bit odd... having never had one before and cant find it in manual.. anyone?

Probably an audible warning. IIRC my last car would beep on ignition on if the outside temperature was 3C or below and flash a frost symbol.

My Alfa did similar, it would warn me that there was potential ice and that traction control would turn off if it detected it :D

it was the coldest its been all year.. ice on car.. lots of it.. ... guessing thats it.. just suprised me.. i dont like things happening..worries me :) its a 3 series bmw ..

I know what you mean, when we first bought the car it was in the summer and everything was fine, then we started driving over wet leaves of which the traction control message would pop up! Scary stuff but it's just there to make us wake up out of autopilot I guess :)

BMWs - well, some of them anyway - have that beep warning at 3 degrees C, to draw your attention to the possibility of frost and ice on the road. Took me by surprise too, because the only time it ever gets that cold in Joburg is overnight in midwinter, when it's extremely dry and the chances of ice on the roads are round about nil, barring a burst pipe or something.

Mine do the same.

Whatever I've got the computer thingy set to display - the 'risk of ice' thing beeps when the outside temp hits whatever the trigger is.

Unfortunately - that's from about October to April here lol

must be at 3 then.. cheers for that everyone.. feel a lot better now ...

oh and Nod... I love my bmw :)

They put the beep on in place of indicators on BMW's, i believe Audi have also picked up on the idea in recent years :)

yup normal for modern cars. my Seat used to scare the carp out of me it was that loud.. :bat:

Mine beeps at just about everything, damned annoying, drove home yesterday with it beeping every time we changed levels ...............................................
because the washer bottle was running low, so going up/downhill or over a bump triggered it :bang:

On my Mondeo, I get a beep and a snow flake on the dash lights up orange snow flake for 1-3 degress or a red snow flake for anything below freezing. What did take me by surprise is the heated front and rear screens switch themselves on a few seconds after starting the engine when the temp is below 1 degree.

Lol :p

I must admit, my Alfa had an intermittent fault whereby it would bleep and say that the nearside dipped bulb needed replacing, even though we replaced it several times!

However, the Jaguar has been totally fine, all the bells and whistles, the only thing it can't do is put the kettle on but that's what a wife is for? :woot:

Some of this stuff is really unnecessary. My last BMW - an automatic - used to beep when you were in reverse. I got the agents to disable it because I knew when it was in reverse, because I'd just selected it!

Our work vans have reversing sensors and as there isn't a lot of room in the yard as soon as you put the in reverse they start beeping :bang::bang:

beeps for key in ignition if door is open, beep for tyre pressure, beep for low fuel beep for seat belt not on, beep for being cold, just beep beep beep, it's like living inside an alarm clock

....and the "door not shut" beep....

.....and the "you've left your lights on" beep ....

We have a variety of makes and sizes, so they do all of these you just have to work out what they are beeping for. :(
Last one wouldn't even let me start the damn thing and I still have no idea why
Turned ignition off and on again and away we went :cuckoo:

Just what you need after scraping the windows = BEEP IT'S COLD OUTSIDE!

Don't forget the "Sensor Buggered" random beeps!

I get the "door not shut" ones (with an indicator to tell me which door) but I keep the lights on automatic so the switch is always on.

Don't vans have to have reverse beepers outside to warn pedestrians/other road users?

Are you sure it wasn't in race mode? :)

Yep, normal.

Seem to recall you have an E46 BMW - they do this as a matter of course. I know mine did.
Pretty sure it didn't stay on the temp thing though, unless I pressed the button to change the display while the temp was showing.
