Sometimes when I am passing I will stop and have a wander round some of the smaller ones.
A couple of weeks ago I saw this plaque and thought Halloween.........................Perfect so paid
the massive amount of £1 with the intention of hanging it outside on the night :D

Put it down when I got home and forgot all about it till yesterday, decided to give it a quick polish and
found a makers name so did and internet search and it seems the value is around £300

Won't be selling it as I do quite like it, any one who has been in my car will understand ;)
But it is not going out on the wall either

Anyone else got any lucky stories of car boot finds ?

My wife's a boot. Does that count?

My missus makes a 2nd income from buying stuff at car boots, as well as other places, and selling them on eBay. Usually its buy something for £2-3 and sell it for £20-30. A couple of the best bargains she has had include a pair of lalique butterfly earrings bought for £1 and sold for £120, a rare old spice shaving mug, again bought for £1 and sold to someone in the States for £150. Just like to say that when she bought these she had no idea of their real value.

If she has no idea of their worth why does she select certain items given the object of the exercise is to provide a second income.

I'd imagine if you are buying something for a pound and sticking it on ebay you're pretty much guaranteed a profit, even without knowing the true value.

Good find Ingrid

Good find Ingrid (y)

Agreed, I don't go to boot sales, but that's a cool piece. I'd just be a bit careful about cleaning and polishing anything that might have collector value, it can ruin it.

When I say she was unaware of the worth of the shaving mug she has sold plenty of shaving mugs before for the £15-20 price region. This one though was very rare, but she didnt know that when she bought it. The Lalique earrings were for her own personal use, it wasnt until she got home and saw the Lalique inscription she realised their true worth.

Thanks People, yes it was a good find for someone who has no idea, just buy what I like

Done nothing to it, just hung it in a safe place (y)

many years ago i bought a fireplace tile i.e from the surround of a old fire ,i bought it because it had some people on it in medieval dresses ,and it went into a display of medieval coins and artefacts i had .i paid the grand sum of 25p for this at a car boot in west bay dorset ,when i sold all my coins etc about 5-6 years ago ,i put this tile on e/bay as well it went for £185-00 ,i enquired from the buyer what was so special as to be told it depicted cinderella at the ball and if i had owned the full set i would have been looking at 5 to 6 grand GRRRRRR

What a good find.

I bought a pair of plates once - Springer Spaniel gun dog scenes. You know the sort you stand up on a Welsh Dresser.

Cost 50p or something. I did the same thing - looked up the artist and they turned out to be a bargain.

The only similar experience I've had was picking up the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year portfolios 1-13 for 3 quid at a boot fair.
I enjoyed them immensely, then sold them on Ebay for a smidge over £300 :-)

(y) Great find!

I don't think I'd sell it either, I really like it.
Hang it somewhere where you can enjoy it too.
Regardless of the value, it only cost you £1 so you'd may as well get some pleasure from it rather than hiding it away somewhere 'safe'.

It is hung on the lounge wall Sarah, with the table lamp underneath lighting it up :)
Certainly won't be going on the outside wall as intended

I think I'd better start hanging round car boot sales!
Never been to one in my life, ever.
Look at all the money I could have made :(

Yeah but there's also loads of rubbish too :p

My comment above was a bit tongue in cheek....

I have done much the same thing but instead of car boot sales I've gone to local auction salerooms. There you have the opportunity to view the stuff and do a bit of 'research' into the goods on offer. My best buy was 5x1960's Pirelli calendars which included the first one issued, '64 I think. £35 paid for them and four of them went for £860 on eBay! I was telling a friend of mine and his only comment, "I hope you declare it for tax"!

Nice one, Ingrid!

As for the taxman, he's unlikely to care too much about someone flogging on the occasional bargain they pick up at a car boot sale but he might visit the sales regularly and make a note of number plates - if someone's there every week, they could be a trader...

I keep thinking about going to car boots. Apparently they can be good for sewing supplies. I'll probably never get round to it though. I make the majority of my kids clothes and the cost of certain things like zips can really add up.
