Capturing the atom bomb on film...

Some incredible pics there especially the ones of the bomb a fraction of a second after detonation.

.

was going to say exactly the same thing, also shows how naive everyone was back then to radiation etc.

incredible photographs of the moment of detonation - never seen anything like them before. Overall, a very thought provoking series of images.

I can't get my head around these, maybe because there's no background. What sizes are they and *what* are they?

Are any of these photographers still alive?

i'm glad I wasn't around at the time of the "Bay of Pigs" incident and the seemingly real threat of the 3rd World War......

Think you'd want more than a ten stopper on for that :D

I have some nice Soviet "atomic flash goggles" here of the type that are/were used for nuclear testing or for recon troops to observe the fall of shot on the nuclear battlefield.

Make great sunnies! 8)

Amazing photos of the most frightening capability we (or at least politicians) have.

Was temmpted to say something about Trident, but wont.

it is just me, or has anyone else thought "b****r that...... glad I wasn't there"

Incredible images.

Part of me finds the images beautiful, but part of me feels distraught that we have this type of destructive power :shake:

Wow indeed! Truly compelling, beautiful, scary and paranoia inducing.

I agree with others about the early detonation shots.....What the hell!!
It looks like a radio microscopy photo, which goes along with the whole fractal universe idea, but still - you know things are epically messed up when it starts to lose its resemblance to our idea of a physical reality.

Im off to look at them old russian photos again, make me feel better.

Great find!

Incredible pictures...

I did some reprints from some old B&W 120 (or similar) negatives at work a few months back, they were pictures of nuclear explosions. There were guys in the foreground observing the blast, but in one photo, there was just a guy by himself standing facing the camera giving a great big smile and thumbs up!

I won't either, I'll just share a picture of one of the submarines... Arran and Isle of Bute in the background... This picture was very recently used by the Monterey Institute of International Studies on the front page of a report titled "Delegitimizing Nuclear Weapons", I've been waiting for the local Navy swat team boys to come through my back door since that  ...

That's a cracking photo - love the way all the peaks line up :)

The images of the moment of detonation are properly weird - can't get my head around them at all!

A beautiful yet terrifying collection of photographs, thanks for the share.
