In preparation for the launch of an iPad OS app, Capture One is discontinuing the separate branded versions of its photo editor, including Capture One for Fujifilm, Capture One for Nikon, and Capture One for Sony. The company says each of these camera brands are supported in Capture One Pro 22 and that moving to a single program will help prepare for upcoming launches, including an iPad version.

So, what does that mean for current users?

Photographers with the latest version of Capture One for Fujifilm / Nikon / Sony (version 22) will receive Capture One Pro for free on April 5th. Owners of older versions of the branded software can upgrade to the full Capture One Pro for the same upgrade price as the branded version until April 18th. Subscribers get a lucky break — the price will remain the same for as long as the subscription is active. There’s no deadline that raises the price, but if branded version subscribers cancel at any time, they’ll be paying the full price if they sign up again later.

Had a quick look on my phone and there doesn’t appear to be any express option to download so guessing that’s gone but will be usable just unsupported.

So I can pay 120 ish quid to upgrade from full Fuji only to full pro version before April as a standalone upgrade.
It’s then £300 for a standalone license for every new version or £24 a month subscription or £180 for a year if paid in one go. I was considering upgrading to Fuji 23 version when it came out as I’m 2 or three versions behind now but I keep seeing how much easier some functions are in Lightroom that I may just go there. I don’t want it catalogued so need to get my head around how that works first. It’s crap that they tell us as existing customers today

I use NX studio or affinity mainly but on odd occasions do like to compare with capture one express
 
Bit of a bummer. I was on C1Pro Fujifilm 12 (I think) and decided to upgrade the middle of last year so as to be ready in case I need to upgrade my MacBook. Now on 21 of course, and was planning to upgrade again next year to C1 23 or 24. I guess I'll be paying a lot more. Not sure if C1Pro 21 is MacBook M1-ready?

And no, LR is not an option!

I am using C1 Pro21 on my MacBook Pro M1 for my FujiFilm, Sony and Lumix cameras without any problems whatsoever. The M1 is running Mac OS Monterey and is blisteringly fast. I will not however upgrade to C1 Pro22 as the pricing is taking the wee wee a bit.

No changes are being made to our Express product at this stage. Your software will continue to work as it is.

I suppose it would be too much to hope that they'll unify the Express versions and keep them free. They may have deals with Nikon, Fuji and Sony (but apparently not Canon!) that will keep these licenses brand-exclusive, unless killing off the paid single manufacturer versions signals the Express versions are also on their way out altogether (whatever they are saying 'at this stage'). If you have more than one Express licence, it's currently a bit annoying to have to install twice and take up double the disk space, even though you are using exactly the same installer (only the licences differ between all versions of Capture, full or Express).

I assume that installing a single copy and just switching the activation number isn't a practical alternative to installing two copies.

The Nikon version has always been a mystery, but the Sony and Fuji versions make C1 money, as they both are made available through deals with Sony or Fuji.

So, as the express versions are currently paid for by the camera manufacturers, I doubt they would go along with a multi-camera version.

There used to be a "paid for" all camera Express version, but it was abandoned at version 7. This was the first version I paid for (but actually trialled version 6), and within a few days, I realised it lacked too many features and Phase One let me switch to the Pro version with a full refund on my Express copy.

I think C1 have rather lost their way over the last few years, and maybe this is the start of them trying to re-find their niche.
