Captioning query when using Photo Mechanic

Play about with it, take and lock some images and get it working how you want before heading to a game so you know what to expect when you get there

The unmount after ingest is fantastic, can just stick cards in and autoingest, then swap them without the need to press anything apart from enter when you insert the next card

If anyone gets stuck with it, more than happy to send over some tips and settings I have

Thanks Steven, I really appreciate the help that you and the other guys have given so far and thanks particularly for your offer of further help.

I'll give it a crack and run through a workflow a few times using as much knowledge as I have at the moment and see how I get on

I FTP through photomechanic

Have the FTP details already saved. saves flicking between programs when PM does it for you

I use Filezilla as well. I find it quite easy to use

I haven't used PM for a while and the last time I did I found its FTP function was noticeably slower than a standalone programme. I was told that PM uses different compression rates and may be slower with multiple uploads.

They may have sorted this out, I don't know, but in any case I use Transmit on recommendation from many colleagues. Its free too.

I've not other software but PM has worked fine for me, even with multiple image uploads (10-12) at half time with no issues. seems to upload happy

I had read reports of people with issues in earlier versions but I've no issues to report

I'm running PM version 5

I think I'll have to do a one-after-the-other type comparison and see if there is a difference in time taken

Let me know how you get on, will be interesting to see / hear comparisons first hand

I use cyber duck or filezilla.
if good connection then i prefer filezilla, but if dodgy/slow connection, cyber duck seems to be better.

I carried out two sets of uploads using the same 5 images using PM and then Cyberduck. The results were pretty close, with Cyberduck taking on average 94% of the time that PM took, so slightly quicker

Interesting, thanks for the comparison

Did you take into account any time difference using the two different softwares ie images already worked on in PM so not having to open another program.

I'd been thinking the same since reading the reply. I had thought even if its 94% by the time I factor in the extra clicks and getting used to it then I would stick with PM FTP

May look at different FTP client when its quiet and no rush to get images out

Just thought I would bring this back up

"blogged" a couple of posts on how I tend to work before a game and during

before

during

Hi Steven. Read both blogs with interest. a lot of good info in there. Autocomplete looks like a neat feature. Will have a look at that. The only question I have is regarding editing. When do you crop/straighten and resize in the workflow?

I edit images after ingesting them. something I missed out of the blog there actually, will amend that later today

I ingest then its just a case of right click, edit selected photos, photoshop it set as the default so auto opens them up and off I go. edit during games is usually cut down to crop, sharpen. I always try to keep any editing to a minimum and get things right in camera first time

Just curious, what size files do you send and what aspect ratio?

usually around 1-1.5mb. size I usually crop to 3000 px longest side with no set ratio as to the short side size.

Just out of interest has anyone using V5 ? If so any real big advantages over V4 ?

Yup. The IPTC fields are customisable under accessibility, which is a major plus, it's slicker but the interface colour takes a bit of getting used to.

Well worth it if you can still get the upgrade discount.
