Ouch - I wonder how much that BA sponsored trip to Barbados was a sensible trip now...

Sadly missed

Very sad news - he was a fighter

Rest in peace Captain Tom

I am really saddened by this, a chap who gave so much. RIP Sir Tom. :(

Sad indeed news indeed...........................but he has left a legacy that may never be matched as well as inspiring others, both the very young and those closer to his age!

RIP

Very sad but at least he lived to the end rather than having several months of miserable existence.

Ill expand,

Really tragic that he has now succumbed to this virus. He was a shining light during the last year (& previous years) & brought only greatness to his name & family.
The comment about the holiday is that now the family may be regretting taking & that's only to be expected. This is in no way a detriment to him. Amazing guy.
Maybe I made my post too brief so sorry about that.

Not only did he raise millions, he also inspired many more people to follow his lead.
Gone but not forgotten R.I.P. Sir Tom

It was really saddening to learn of this news. One of the few remaining WW2 veterans from a generation that saved our country and other countries too from Nazi tyranny. I have an interest in WW2 history and there's a section in my newspaper that tells the story of the life of someone of distinction who has recently died and those who fought in WW2 or played a part in some other way, maybe working with SOE behind enemy lines, make for the most interesting read. Most were only in their early 20's. The memory I'll have of Capt Sir Tom is him speaking the words to the song "You'll never walk alone" and saying that "Tomorrow will be a good day". A positive,can-do attitude and as a couple on here have said, an inspiration too. Very sad.

You may feel you've expanded but you're digging a deeper hole.

I'm not sure why, I think these comments are perfectly valid.

He was in the most vulnerable age group and during a time when it was 'essential travel' only his family took him to Barbados, there are pictures of them with Russ Abbot, no masks or social distancing.

I agree with Diving Pete, the family my be secretly regretting the holiday.

That aside, this man was a true example of how we all should act and feel towards each other and he'll be sadly missed.

I think you do and I think they aren't, stop p***ing on someones grief ffs.

I think this thread was opened to pay our RESPECT to a fantastic man, not to start saying this that and every other thing. Show some RESPECT.
How was I not showing respect?

Did you read this? - That aside, this man was a true example of how we all should act and feel towards each other and he'll be sadly missed.

Despite what you may think, we live in a free democracy where people are entitled to air their opinions as long as they are not offensive or derogatory.

You're correct, we do live in a free democracy, so feel free to start a thread on the rights and wrongs of Captain Sir Tom and his family....

I don't want to. I was simply referring to a post earlier in this thread by Diving Pete agreeing that the family may well be regretting the decision.
And if you missed it, I also paid my respects to the man.

If you don't like someone's opinion, scroll on and enjoy the rest of your day.

One of the main problems of society today is peoples inability to accept that other people may have an opinion that differs from their own, and just because it's different doesn't automatically make it wrong.

My mother and father-in-law are both 84 and have left the house once since March 2020, to get their first dose of the vaccine 2 weeks ago.

If we were offered a holiday would we take them? No, because of their age and because my mother-in-law is clinically vulnerable. If we did and she caught COVID we'd feel extremely guilty.
I understand Capt. Tom Moore was old and extremely vulnerable and he probably thought it was his last chance to have a holiday with his family, and they all made that decision which is fine, I have no problem with that, I really hope he enjoyed it. But I don't see a problem with anyone who airs the view that the family themselves may be questioning whether it was a good idea.

As an ex-serviceman I've got nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for the man.

There's a lot of irony in your first sentence....surely the people that are commenting about your comments are only voicing their opinion?

Exactly, and I haven't said I have an issue with that.
I just said I agreed with him that the family may have quiet regret. Feel free to go back and read my comments.

Actually I think your problem is you have no insight into your complete and utter lack of insight on this issue. Someone posts an RIP to show some respect and you p*** on it in a cowardly way ie with a sh1t sandwich. Just like that trick of putting a bit of bad feedback between 2 bits of good, you do the same with 1. RIP 2.(shouldn't have done what he did so it's his own fault)3. will be missed.

@Marc @Cobra @TheBigYin @Marcel PLEASE, can one of you or any other moderator when you see this either delete the whole thread or lock it before it escalates. Please.

You're correct, the family may have quiet regret, or maybe they're glad they did it.....
Doesn't need to be discussed on a thread that was started for people to pay their respects....

I have insight into the issue. I don't like to be painted as the bad guy for expressing an opinion.

I also manage to express my thoughts without resorting to words like 'p*ss', 'p*****g' or swearing abbreviations like 'ffs'.

I think Hanley has been entirely reasonable. You are too easily offended Donnie and for some reason can not respect someone’s opinion that is different to your own. They might be right, you might be right but, there is no need to go off on one and start insulting people. Just move on.

Well good for you, if you are trying to infer you have some sort of maturity I refer you back to the insight issue, because you really don't and that's the irony and why Ive reported the thread to the moderators as you continue to show an unbelievable amount of disrespect.

I wonder how long it'll take my stalker craig to dislike this post too.

Look stalker, you'll simply post anything anti me and agree with anyone that doesn't agree with me, and ironically are turning the thread into a row. Youre really a special kind of stupid.

How did I p*** on it in a cowardly way?
You obviously didn't read what I wrote about your "sandwich"

Lets get a few facts correct. Capt Tom flew to Barbados on 11th dec before strict travel restrictions came into force. There was an authorised travel corridor to Barbados at the time.
It has been reported that there was 1 (one) covid case on the island at the time. Ergo, he was safer in Barbados that he was here, sadly subsequent events seem to prove this.
Captain Tom did not catch Covid in Barbados, he had tested negative after returning and it appears he caught covid during a hospital visit after his return. He was receiving treatment
for pneumona. Read more here:-
Further confirmation that hospitals are dangerous places to be during this pandemic.
