I'm off to Cape Town for a couple of days next month and was wondering if anyone had been to Simons Town. It looks like its much closer to the interesting stuff (penguins/cape/ mountains). What's it like to photograph and is it a better option than Cape Town in people experience. I'll be staying in Cape Town on the Sunday night but was thinking of spending the Saturday night in Simons town to be near the shore for some sunrise and sunset shots.

Thanks

Simians town is ok. The penguins are cute but its in a well managed park and you can't get that close. Plus I doubt u can go when the light I at its best.

Simons town is also quite small but its in the Cape Town commuter belt so it pretty busy with traffic etc

It all depends in what you want to do really. I was there last year on an underwater photo assignment but had a little chance I view the place topside as well.

I saw that, the park only opens way after sunrise and before sunset... :/ however there are supposed to be penguins on beaches slightly further down that I'm hoping will be possible to shoot. Either way it appears there is more to do there than Cape Town proper, just getting to it.

Whichever you go to, try and get to Moyo in nearby Stellenbosch for a meal....awesome experience!

All you can eat native cuisine, entertainment and eat it all in treehouses!

For sunset photography try a drive along Victoria Road (M6) between Camps Bay and Llandudno. There are some wonderful big rock formations along that bit of coast. If nothing there floats your boat try the very small sandy beach at Llandudno. You access the beach from Victoria Rd onto Llandudno Rd, Fisherman's Bend onto Sandy Bay Rd which brings you to Sunset Avenue. If you have a look on Google maps you'll see the easy access down to the beach.

Simon's Town or Simonstown. Cape Point Nature Reserve is worth a visit, opens at 06h00 until the end of March, then 07h00 until spring, but Simon's Town itself is nothing special. There are better places to go in the Western Cape.

Try this site: http://www.outdoorphoto.co.za/joomla/. The owner (Hedrus Van Der Merwe) is a good guy, and a professional wildlife photographer. Lots of forums and mainly local contributors. You'll have to register to post - which only takes a minute or two - but ask your questions there, or mail Hedrus, and you'll get helpful info.

Thanks, ill have a look at the suggestions. The big issue is I won't be driving so unless its located on the train or within walking distance it's not going to be an option! Where would you suggest is better? I'm interested in shooting the penguins in the morning/evening and will probably end up doing a hark dive/try and get some breaching photos.

Simon's Town is good for a few hours - I though Boulder's Bay was better then Betty's Bay for the penguins to be honest. Nice architecture and some super cafes on the main drag...

Chapman's Peak Drive is fantastic. Llandudno lacks the Great Orme

But it has Sandy Bay, which was a nudist beach when I was there 30 years ago.

Agreed about Chapman's Peak.

Taken near Llandudno. The wreck is no longer visible today, having broken up.
