Just recently while looking at some holiday pics in a particular folder I've noticed that I can't open some of them, yet some I can. These were all taken at the same time with the same point and shoot camera with the same settings. I've tried opening them with all sorts of programes and viewers but no joy, the file info says they are JPG files but thats all I know. Anyone any ideas?

Sounds like they may be corrupted, have you confirmed that the file extension has not been inadvertently changed?

Can you view them in the camera?

Which camera? and how are you trying to view them?

There's an odd thing that can happen with some cameras (I know a couple of Sony compacts this happens to, including the HX9V) where if you remove the memory card from the camera and place it in a card reader you will find that some images cannot be viewed or copied unless the memory card has the lock slider moved to the "Lock" position.

Sorry, but I don't understand what you are asking.

I don't have the camera anymore I'm afraid.

The camera was a Sony Cybershot W7 I've tried to view them with lots of different programs and viewers on my computer running windows 7.

I was able to view the pictures until maybe six months ago no problem but they won't open anymore.

use a file viewer to tellyou exactly what extension the file is.
Could you shoot in raw with that camera? not familiar with that model.

What is the file type suffix?

By that I mean the three letters after the dot in the name, like picturename.xyz

What is xyz in the files that won't open?

OK, my post could have been clearer, I tend to assume that everyone knows as much as me, my apologies for that - sincerely, I am not being fatuous.
each picture has a name, it usually looks like ABC1234.jpg or 1234.jpeg or 1234.JPG or similar. The file extension is the .jpg bit (the . is the bit that tells the computer that the file name is finished, the jpg is the bit that tells the computer what to open the file with).
If the extension has been changed in any way then the computer will get a wendy on and fail to open it.
From what you are saying it does suggest that your files are damaged, I'm afraid I don't know how to correct that - it may be worth putting them on a usb stick and asking a friend to open them? If that works get your friend to save them with new names, that would possibly solve the problem??

Windows photo viewer says "type of file- JPG File (.jpg)

This is what the photos that will open are also called. Hope this helps.

I am am sure that the camera didn't have the option to shoot in RAW.

Yes, sounds like you need to try them on another machine but it doesn't look good I'm afraid...

I have just done as you suggested and no luck I'm afraid, none of them would open so looks like they have gone for good. Thanks for all your help.

Try emailing them to someone else.... If you want me to have a go at opening then feel free to PM me for my email address.

Cheers,

Ste

quick note. if windows is set to hide file extensions, then .jpg at the end does not mean it's set as a jpeg file. you could add .jpg to a filename but if the extension is hidden you could end up with filename.jpg.pdf, you just don't see the PDF bit
however, if you just open up your fileviewer..I like irfanview for example, and drag and drop the file into there, it should open up regardless...corruption is a messy thing though.
Not sure how to solve that one. Would be interested to see Stephen's findings
good luck!

Neil,
Am struggling with this......

I have emailed you.

If anyone else has this problem, the original memory card is the key to recovery - I am not saying the pic cannot be recovered if the card is gone, it just makes it more difficult.

I will let Neil post if he / we sort it out.

Cheers,

Ste

Ste - where are the images? Are they still in a folder on the memory card?

Memory card was sold with camera so is no longer available, Neil may have another backup so am leaving it with him, he is welcome to come back to me if he wants further help. (As is anyone else....)

Cheers,

Ste

Another thought that I mentioned to Neil is that the pictures may be accessible by a recovery program whilst on the hard drive of the computer they were initially on.

Hope it works out for you Neil, feel free to drop me a line if you want help.

Cheers,

Ste
