Cant open raw files in pse 7

I understood that to open a raw file i would have to download something called a CODEC

file from the Canon download centre - i have a canon 600d. Having done that i sort of thought that once the codec thingy was downloaded a raw image would open in pse 7, but it isnt happening.

Is there something else i should be doing, any help would be very much appreciated.
 
PSE 7 is probably too old to have a version of "Camera Raw" that is compatible with the 600d.
 
You'll need ACR 6.4.1 for the 600D - that is at least Elements 9.
 
sorry ive not been on for a while,yes ive got the cam software that came with the cam,and it opens the raw file in that,but when i ask it to open with pse it opens the program,and then pse says it cant open file lots of numbers then cr at the end.!!!! so i downloaded updates for pse still didnt change the file in pse....so i went to the adobe web site and downloaded codec 5.5 and followed the instructions on the screen to the letter,i.e remove old codec and replace it with the new one, in the pse program which is what i did, still tried to open a raw pic pse opened and says cant open file lots of number,s with cr at the end,,,,,,,now im banging my head against the wall and its giveing my arse tooth ache lol
 
Not sure, what you mean with "codec 5.5" - a link please?

But you'll never get PSE7 to open a RAW file from your 600D. The software you got with the camera must be told to send either a JPEG or an 8-bit TIFF file to PSE for you to use it.
By the sound of what you're saying, it sounds to me like it sends the RAW file to PSE7... which will not work unless you upgrade your PSE.

Unfortunately I don't know the Canon RAW converter, so hopefully someone knowledgable will be kind to step in here.
 
Make sure you have the latest update for elements 7 (it'll be 5. something I think) then download the latest dng converter, you have to convert your raw to dng first then they should open in elements camera raw.
 
hello right ive managed to sort it with a help of a friend,i put lightroom in,and it has a dng converter in it,so can edit in there first,and if i want to send it to pse which now opens the raw file, i would like to say thank u for your help and thoughts brian
