Please help.
Ive been using the trial version of CS3 with the camera raw plug-in from abode, which was great until the trial ran out and its too much money to warrant buying.

Im now back to my Photoshop 6 but have discovered i cant open my CR2 files and the camera raw plugin only works with Photoshop CS, CS2 and CS3. :bang:

Cant find any info on abode site,
so how do I open CR2 raw files?

Try downloading adobe's Digital Negative Convertor

Thats the only way I can get CS to open the raw files from my 5D

Cs2 on the lappy works fine, but the older main desktop machine doesn't warrant the money spending on it to make cs3 viable...so I use DNC to sort it, takes a while to do it's stuff on 4gb of images though...but it's freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Downloaded abode's DNC and its converted my CR2 raw files to .dng files, but i now cant open the .dng files :bang: as photoshop 6 wont recognize them :annoyed:

Its enough for me to stick to shooting jpeg, arrrggggghhhhhhhh

Photoshop 6 wont open any RAW files or DNG files.

You have a few basic options,

Use your RAW converter that came with the camera ie DPP, convert the raws to tiff then open in photoshop.

Upgrade to a version of photoshop that will support your camera cr2 files, as all cr2 files are diffrent and camera specific. Photoshop CS & CS2 will no longer be updated by Adobe so you may want to take that into account, for a cheaper alternative look at Photoshop Elements.

Lightroom will do want you want to do and is much cheaper

will ps 6 not accept the latest version of the raw converter plugin? I'd have thought that would fix the problem.

You cant put ACR into a version of Photoshop it wasnt designed to run in.

If you want a free solution, try e.g. Raw Therapee and/or UFRaw.

Just tried Raw Therapee and it keeps crashing when i go to open a CR2 file :bang:
Im running Vista and cant find any info on their site to say its compatible.

Bl**dy computers, bl##dy software, too many different ##oo## files,:annoyed:

Thanks mho, i missed your post.
Thats the next step, loading DPP and try that as it came with the camera. Just hope its Vista friendly.

Cant believe that Abode is not updating CS and CS2 from now on, cant afford CS3 and im still on PS 6.
Think i will look into something like Lightroom or elements.

sorry to partly hijack thread but i am having the same problem with PSE 5. when i had my olympus it opened them but it isn't with my canon. Is there anything i can do do it will work with PS EL 5

thanks

It's a while since I've tried but I'm pretty sure RSE can't handle CR2 files.

Yes your right Steep, ive tried RSE and it does'nt recognize CR2 files. :annoyed:
Thanks anyway LadyLens

Try the Gimp! it works.

Ah, sorry, guys, not being a Canon user I wasn't sure, but was worth mentioning just in case.

Doesn't the camera come with Canon software that can convert and/or open? OK, I know the Nikon one [Picture project is so terminally slow] isnt great, but did do the job before I was advised about better s/w?

Thanks everyone for your help.

Forgot about using the software that came with the camera as i normally use a card reader and process in PS 6.
Its only because ive started shooting in CR2 raw (huge difference) and the CS3 trail ended, that i came up with this problem.

Ive loaded the canon software DPP and it opens CR2 raw files, which i can then save as a TIFF and export into Photoshop 6. Not very impressed with it though, much prefered Abode Camera Raw with CS3. Never mind it was good for a month.

Anyway im going to look at purchasing some new software probably something like Lightroom or Elements.

Thanks for the quick responses

Nikon ViewNX is way better than Picture Project, imo. It has more options that can come very handy, you can even edit curves, although in a quirky way.

You'll be able to open raw file in the GIMP if you install UFRaw after you install the GIMP (UFRaw installer installs a GIMP plug-in).

So I heard, but I had already discovered RSE when I found out about it, which was doing the job nicely until recently when I finally managed to sort an upgrade from CS to CS3. ;)

Have you updated your DPP to the latest release available from Canon ?.

DPP will resolve more data from your RAW file than ACR will, and the tones will be better.

Just a point have you made sure that you don't have any picture styles assigned to the image as these can really screw with your RAW file, and its conversion.
All I would be looking to do in the RAW conversion is adjust your levels so your not clipping highlights and shadows, and correcting your white balance if needed. Then setting your output file settings for you tiff.
