Could somebody please give me an idiots guide to opening a raw image in photoshop elements 9 please?

jpegs open - I've uninstalled/reinstalled photoshop twice, each time updates raw converter but still no access to raw

Read a previous thread and downloaded Adobe DNG Converter 8.3 "rightly or wrongly" and still no access to raw, just a message "cannot open"

At 73, and not the smartest oap on the block, that's why I ask for idiots guide!!!

What camera are you using? You need the correct version of the ACR module to match your camera.

Is it a limitation of Photoshop Elements? (compared with Photoshop).

I use Photoshop CS6 so don't know the latest version # for Elements, but make sure you update to latest version so your particular camera model is catered for.

Try searching online (Google etc) for answers to this problem if no-one can help you here.

If you have downloaded Adobe Raw Converter, have you used it to convert the raw files to .dng files for import into elements 9? The converter works as a separate conversion program, and once the images have been saved in the new format I should expect them to be importable.

Thanks for the replies, I have a canon g1x and a Panasonic fz200

Used the Adobe Raw Converter as suggested - success with the fz200 raw images thanks, but no success with the g1x images?

In very simple terms what's the difference between ding and raw?

.dng is a digital negative, the idea being that it's a 'universal' standard format, rather than using one of the various raw file formats that the different camera makers use. It also includes (or should anyway) information about edits performed in lightroom etc, rather than as a second sidecar file that some applications create. The idea is that the original raw data remains untouched within the file, but may be viewed as though it were edited.

Isn't the G1X the old (original) Canon pro compact? Odd that even an older version of software should have problems opening files from that.

Thanks for the explanation Toni - for some unknown reason (probably me!!) the canon g1x images can be converted, many thanks for your help
