can't get internet on PC

Hi folks,
I am having problems getting on the net on my old PC, it's running XP and the provider is talktalk. I get a signal which tells me I am receiving between 12 and 30 mbps which I would have thought should be good enough, however when I try and access the net through IE9 or Goggle Chrome nothing happens until I get a message saying it took too long to connect or is not available. Does this sound like the problem is with talktalk or the PC, I don't have problems getting on the net with my laptop or tablet, but having said that the PC is fixed and the farthest away from the router, and although I really only use it for printing or scanning it would be useful to be able to access the net, rather than log off and switch something else on. I don't do any gaming or downloading.

Has it ever worked where it's sat?
Have you tried running a cable rather than using wifi?

yes, it has worked until recently, unfortunately the pc is three rooms away from the router to be able to run a cable to it,

Sounds like something's changed in the software protocol. Have you done any 'tidying up' on it recently?
 
A computer with Windows XP is not one I'd be accessing the internet with. Alot of sites will actually block you as you are seen as a threat. Make sure your wireless adaptor is set to auto pickup an IP and your web browser connection setting is set to auto detect to.

Have you used the command prompt to try and ping a website incase it's the browser?
 
As much as XP is now out of support for security patches it is st ill one of the best OS around. If you think your wifi connection has died then hardwire it. Prove that it isn't the hardware by temporarily moving your PC close to your router and testing. If that is ok then co side using ethernet plug sockets (about £20). Even being several rooms apart you can use your electricity sockets to provide Internet connections using something like TP-link

XP is not the best OS for security, hardware support, software support, memory management or speed. So exactly what is XP best at?
 
you could always try to run a linux OS via a memory stick and see if that will connect.
 
If it did work on ethernet you could buy a pair of homeplugs to get ethernet closer to it.
 
being connected to your touter and being connected to the internet are two different things.

goto to START and RUN and type cmd

now type ipconfig and press return

what numbers do you get.

does the ipaddress start 169 ?

yes, I did some disc clean ups and come to think of it the problem has only occurred since then, can you suggest a way to "go back"? and thanks to everyone else who replied, I will try everything you suggest.

There's no chance of it being upgraded to Win 10!
 
This sounds like a PCs to router problem try to access the router you will need its IP address.
