Ok, given these 2 as options, which would you choose?

Like I have posted before, this camera will be mainly used to shoot people in studio and on location so needs to be as versatile as possible, but with excellent image quality...

option 1:

Canon 5D MK2
Canon 16-35mm L F2.8 (or 24-70mm L F2.8)
Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon 70-200mm L F2.8

option 2:
Canon 1DS MK3
Canon 24-70mm L F2.8
Canon 1.4x teleconverter

I am tempted to spend the (little) extra and go for option 2?

Damn I hate choice lol!!!

I'd go with option 1 (including the 24-70mm) purely for focal length alone. TBH, I can't see a reason for getting the 50mm f/1.8 with the other two lenses there.

Option2 seems like a hell of a financial commitment for a hobby, or can you make it pay for itself [you don't mention your subjects paying above]

Not sure about the 16-35 for portraiture, but you know what they say about rules!.......

Only because I already have a nifty and I thought I may as well keep it rather than sell :)

Yeah, thats what I thought...

Basically, all I can see that you get with the 1ds over the 5d is that you get 45point AF (but then again most time in the studio I will be manually focusing) and you get 1/250 sync speed for the flash rather than 1/200 with the 5D (which I must admit is quite attractive).

This I find weird actually, because my 20D has 1/250 sync speed and the 5D doesnt!

All the other features of the 1ds I wouldnt really need (such as the weather sealing)

lol, I am talking myself out of it the more I post

Basically I guess I figured I would rather spend the money on the top model so I dont have to upgrade the body so soon, but the picture quality I guess will be the same from both camera bodys as the sensor is basically the same...?

I would love the 85mm but its so expensive that I dont think I would get the benefit from the extra low light speed.

maybe it will be the 5D with extra money for L series lenses

Why the canon x1.4 in option 2, is this for another lens as it won't work with the 24-70.

I suppose the usual message of try them both blah blah blah but you'll no doubt have thought of that. I'd go with the lower cost option. The 1DS3 will no doubt be replaced soon enough and you'll have spent a lot of wonga on a body that you possibly may think is old news. It's a choice I'd like to be making right now, that's for sure!
By the way, another vote for your website, it's excellent and your images are cool. Loving the expression on your boys face!

thanks very much for the comments about my site, much appreciated!

I think I will go for the 5D as then I can spend much more on glass... I am going to go on my course this weekend and then I should have a much clearer idea when I return :)
