Hi,

I'm getting myself into a right mess here trying to pick a camera to buy it must be Nikon or Canon and I don't want to spend anymore than £500

I'm never owned DSLR camera before however I've used my fathers Canon 30D and Canon 600D, how this is where the issue starts i'm looking at these camera's

Nikon D3200, Canon 1100D, 550D, 600D & maybe 650D?

I like the look of the D3200 due to the 24MP's, however if I go for a Canon I can use my fathers canon lens so maybe I could just buy a body then borrow his lens for a month or too, or just start fresh with the Nikon.

Again due to this camera being my first I don't want anything that will be out of my depth but then again I want something that I can grow into and keep for a couple of years.

The sort of photo's that I take are of wildlife sometimes motorsport but that's once a year, landscapes and of the family so all rounder to be honest, I don't care about the weight of the camera that isn't an issue :)

I'm just stuck :(!

When I was looking for my first camera, I chose canon because my sister shot canon and it meant we could swap equipment. It also meant that she could help me with brand specific questions. As your dad shoots canon, this could save you quite a bit of money as you may be able to borrow his lenses. It will also mean you can try lenses for a while before you commit to buying your own.

You have a great advantage of going Canon if you are able to borrow lenses from your Dad, however the decision has to be yours at the end of the day based on which you're most comfortable with.

Above all the technial aspects of any given camera, a great piece of advice often given here is go into a local camera shop and try each one you can in hand. The feel of each in hand is quite different and will help to make your decision for you.

I started off with Nikon based on a family member always shooting Nikon, but as soon as I actually put a Canon in my hand every thing seemed to fit much more simply for me.

Try it and see for yourself.

The megapixel count is irrelevant. Don't even consider it when choosing a camera..

Go to a shop an try all the cameras out. The one that feels best in your hands, and the one that the menu is easy for you to understand is the one to go for.

I chose nikon as my parents had nikon and we could share/swap equipment.

If your dad has canon, go canon.

Megapixel count means nothing in reality, holding a camera and having a play will tell you which camera.

I agree.

I think that there's probably very little between the available cameras. If being fussy Nikon probably has the edge in dynamic range and noise and overall image quality but I'd imagine that the vast majority of people would never see the difference in real world shooting so going for a Canon to share lenses seems sensible to me.

I've just seen I could get a second hand canon 40d for around the same price range would the 40d be better choice over all these cameras?

I would definitely echo the Canon route if there's a chance of being able to borrow lenses with your dad.

As for the 40d I've just added one to my camera bag and love it. It's a good camera, Ive used one a few times alongside my 400d as my brother lent it to me.

I'd say if you have the £500 budget then I'd certainly recommend something like the 40d and the other £250ish can go on a bag, lenspen, rocket blower, cloth and a couple of spare batteries. Then (remembering what you can borrow from your dad, and how often) look at what lenses you want.

Oh and a side by side comparison of all the cameras you listed in your first post here could throw up some ideas.

I went into jessops and didn't like the 1100d nor the d3100 so in the end went with a new 650d with lens kit for £540 but I've just seen some reviews rating the Nikon d5100 to be a better camera and I've just checked the prices and for 2x lens plus sd card and d5100 is £2 more than what I paid for my 650d today thinking I might go for that :/

What's the d5100 like against the 650d?

They are both the latest generation, they are both in the same price range.

They are both the same, bar the name on the front. I can wholeheartedly guarantee you would not notice a single difference in the most important factor, which is image quality between the two.

Just enjoy what you have and stop worrying about what might be better than it. At this stage of your photography, a camera is going to be a huge learning curve and you won't be using it anywhere near its full potential.

Remember you can claim £50 cash back on your camera at the moment!

I got the 650D for the wife when they first came out. She loves it and I have a heck of a job to persuede her to let me borrow it. It's ISO system is very impressive and the touchscreen makes it very easy to use. With a good lens on it you can get some fantastic quality photos from it.

yeah thanks for your advice I slept on it over night and will be keeping the 650 :), just want to order a bigger lens for it now

What lenses does your father have - do you need to duplicate a lens ?

The Canon 55-250IS lens is a cracker for the price, as is the Canon 70-300IS.

Might be worth seeing what route your photography takes you, before you start spending money...
