Hello there

So, id love a 24 - 70, esp after spending a day chasing a baby today for photos! lol.... But just dont have the money, does anyone use another brand they can recommend?

Cheers

The sigma 24-70 HSM is Ok, but at around £500 still isnt cheap. There are 2 other versions of the sigma but they arent really all that optically.

Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 thats going to be my next buy, poor mans 24-70 :)

Thanks gents, so its sigma or tameron it seems, which is the better though..

I have a tameron 90mm macro, find it quite noisy.....not tried sigma before..

Wow! only £160, where was that from? thats a great price!

There has been a few on Ebay recently, most going for under £200, not sure if im going to go with the new route or 2nd hand, but the Tamron is definately one I want, you can see some shots from that lens here there is 11 pages of them

wait - save - nothing comes close to the Nikkor 24-70 - worth the wait - have patience! :)

Borrox, I was just watching on on ebay and got engrossed in something else and forgot about it, just sold for £137, arghhhhhhh

nope - you get what you pay for.

Andrew with all due respect, this is a good lens for the price, not everyone can afford the Nikkor 24-70mm, its a lens a lot of us would love but its always going to be out of my price range

I have the Tamron, and will be selling it soon as hope to get the Nikon. It is a great lens for the money, especially second hand. IQ is reasonable and it is fast enough to me to AF. I did have the Nikon 17-55 and tried some basic test shots. At 5.6-f8 there was little difference bit thought that the Nikon was better in the 2.8 and f4 areas..

It would take too long, Im struggling just using my 50mm with kids, need something a bit more flexible.... when I get enough kids, Ill get myself a nice nikon! Until then, beggars cant be choosers....:'(

Cheers Simon, I see we have similar kit, do you have any examples of the Tam I can look at ?:)

Just to throw into the mix, I was also thinking of the Tamron 17-50mm as Im not yet full frame...... once again, more kids bookings = more £ = Sara gets a full frame! Woo hoo! :D

If you go here, you will see a master list of lots of Nikon fit lenses and Nikkor lenses with example shots, a great resource thanks to Nikon Cafe

There is also a link to the Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 so you can see some shots from this lens as well

I went for Sigma 24-70 - it won the battle with Tamron 28-75.
I wanted to shoot as wide as possible - you can always crop photos.
I have older version of this lens, I have spent 30 minutes in the shop testing focus (I went there prepared with test prints :P ).
It is very sharp and gives lovely colours and contrast.
Have a look at my website - most of the photos were taken with this lens.

If you can find a Sigma 28-60mm f2.8 you won't be disappointed. Sharpest lens I've ever owned and they don't sell for much either.

Ah yes, 24-60mm. Must think before typing.

do you mean 28-70mm or 24-60mm.

Will take a look at that one too , thanks

How about a nikon 24-85?
Not in the same league as the 24-70 but at a quarter of the price it's not bad!

Tamron 28-75mm here as well, ive owned the Nikon 24-70 and 28-70 and seriously wouldnt buy either of the Nikons again, it really doesnt make financial sense, the Tamron is 97% the image quality of the Nikon but 20% of the price.

Build quality isnt as good but buy 2 of them and you'll always have a spare anyway :D

Is that a 2.8?

This maybe a daft question but why is it so much cheaper than the 24 - 70?

Not the 2.8. I think it's the 3.5 to 5.6.
I figured most of the shots were taken at f/5.6 to f/8 anyway.

(For low light shots I now use my 50mm f/1.4.)

It's cheap because it's not weather sealed, not constant f/2.8, and not multicoated.

Ahhhh

Well yes im on the 50mm 1.4 but need more flexiblity shooting kids im finding...hence looking for something with a bit of range..:D

I've the Nikon 24-70 and Tamron 28-75 as a backup. Whilst the Nikon has the optical edge, I'd say the Tamron is provides an image which is at least 80% as good for a fraction of the cost. My understanding is that the model without a built-in motor (non-BIM) is the one to go for so as your camera's focusing motor will do a better job.

Tamron pros:
  • Really nice optically
  • Relatively cheap
  • Much lighter than the Nikon (lots of plastic)
  • Much smaller than the Nikon

Tamron cons:
  • No weatherproofing
  • Not as well built as the Nikon
  • Not as robust as the Nikon

I wouldn't be surprised if the AF in the Nikon was superior as well. To be honest, I've hardly used the Tamron since I got it and may end up selling it, but if I didn't want to or couldn't cough up for the Nikon then I'd go for the Tamron.
