Yes
I have a HP microserver running FreeNAS software. I turned it off this evening (manually by holding down the button) then moved it into another room, connected it up and turned it on. It did the usual loud fan startup and then gave two short beeps.. lights are on, I can see the IP address through my virginmedia router (192.168.0.12) and also see the freenas icon under windows network, but it won't let me connect either in windows on the web browser.. anyone any ideas? I don't have access to monitor, keyboard etc to set it up..

Just in case it helps, you are trying to access it under its new IP address and not whatever IP address your programmes may remember. Sorry if you are already doing that :(

Yes, I have the IP address that it's using from the virginmedia router.. it gives me a up time etc showing it's a live connection.. but just can't access it..

Connect a network cable between the router and the Gen8's ILO port then try to connect your browser to the IP address assigned to it. You'll need the ILO ID & password from the bit of yellow card that came with the Gen8. You could also download the ILO remote console instead of using your browser. ILO is an essential tool for managing HP servers so start using it.

It's also a good idea to assign a server a static IP address via the DHCP section on your router. Somewhere up in the 250's, out of the normal DHCP range, is ideal. Assign the adjacent one to the ILO port as well.

Why would you just power down any machine, let alone a file server. Hope it wasn't running a scrub at the time and rebuilding data..

Beep codes suggest 2 us related to PCi, any cards installed?

But otherwise as above always static IP for nas, printers etc.

Neil, two beeps is normal for a Gen8 boot sequence. It marks the point at which it selects the boot device.

I'd be betting on a file system check. Especially as you hard powered off, rather than shutdown. It could leave the file system "dirty". Haven't used freenas, but it could either be prompting for it to run, or actually running it (which could take some time depending on the size of the drives/amount in use).

Can you plug it into a TV even?

Thanks, will give a that a go later on.

Odd, their documentation page says it's PCi. Wouldnt surprise me if the HP docs are wrong though..
I gave my NAS4Free Gen8 a prod via ILO to make sure I was talking out of the correct orifice.....
Both my Gen8s do it. This one has nothing in the PCI slot, the other has a RAID card.

OK, strange one, but its working fine with my wifes laptop (windows 10) but I still do not have access to my windowshare or the server via network..

Recent versions of Windows have firewalls built-in. But it could be a Windows master browser problem. It's possible that the server was the MB but either yours or your wife's PC got elected to MB when you turned off the server. I'm not at home until Sunday evening but hopefully someone else can talk you through finding which PC is the MB.

How many other devices do you have on your home network? This sounds to me like two devices have been allocated the same IP address.

Glad it is sorted but make sure you setup the ILO although you will need an advanced ILO key to use remote access virtual screen.
I use mine all the time, I have my Micro server running W10 with a P410i Raid card and it is an amazing machine.

Thanks for all the comments.. will have a look at the ILO.. my wife gave birth to our third child today, so will be busy for the foreseeable future..

I thought I would drag this thread up from the dead rather than starting another.. I still have the HP microserver setup running freeNAS software from a USB drive.. TBH it's a complete pain.. I can't get access from my surface, but my desktop and laptop work fine.. I can get into the setup via the IP address but I can;t get onto a mapped drive.. Can I remove FreeNAS and install windows 10 and use it with mapped network drives?? I'm more comfortable than messing with jails etc etc in FreeNAS..

Should be okay as Mr Bump said his microserver was running W10.
One thing worth trying before changing the OS is to create a desktop shortcut to the server. I have to do this to access one of my NAS but the other which used to have the same problem is now fine. It might be worth checking what level of SMB is enabled on the various devices as this can affect browsing.

yep its a superb machine to run w10 fully supported.
you will need 16gb idealy, only thing I find is the w10 install will not find the PCI network card properly so you will need to download from HP.
also see if you can buy or get an advanced ILO key worth its weight in gold.

I have WHS 2011 on mine runs perfectly
