OK so last week I was cursing that because of the lack of a PC port on my 580ex flash I was going to have to buy the ST-E2 trigger.

Turns out that there are triggers available that are hotshoe connections rather than the PC port that pocketwizards use. DOH!

But by then I'd gone and ordered the infernal ST-E2.

Luckily however, I ordered it from Kerso and it duly arrived yesterday. Bearing in mind what CanonBob had said about the lack of a battery (It's a weird CR5) I duly nipped out this morning and got two batteries.

Lunch break saw me quickly scan the instructions and had a play. Just had a quick go at backlighting a wine bottle and it's easy peasey!

It's certainly going to give me a lot more flexibility than trying to use a cable that's too short! Kept pulling the bleeping tripod over

For people lighting I've got the two off camera vivitars that I can bring in but I can actually see a lot of potential for the 580ex as a single off camera light. Still lifes just got a whole lot easier.

I know it's not cheap at £125 but I'll have to admit, I rather like it :cuckoo:

Hi ALi B

enjoy it....I also have one and like it a lot....gives you more flexibility.....

The ST-E2 also works as a nice focus assist for low contrast subjects or if it's too dark for normal focus....useful on a flashless 5D.

Fantastic tip Bob, thanks.

I've got a 5D and a 1Ds MkII (both flashless) so I'll bear that in mind.

Oh and the ST-E2 does flash ratios too. You can set your master and slave flashes and program the ST-E2 for say 1:3 ratio and it does it for you.

You don't get that on studio flashes! :)

Just to avoid any confusion, all flashes have to be slaves when the ST-E2 is in use as the ST-E2 is master. Still not a problem however as the ratio thing can be maintained by setting one group of slaves as Group A and the other as Group B

Do you "have" to use a Canon flash unit with the ST-E2 ? I have the Sigma flash unit that gives eTTL etc, so would that work ?

Steve,

I think it depends which version you have. The 500 DG is missing some of the tricks but the later "500 DG Super" addressed the whole thing and it can be master or slave (and hence works with the ST-E2). Inevitably there will be a few things that a reverse engineered item didn't quite get to grips with and it may be worth reading this link for the idiosyncrises that pop up when you're not watching.

Does the 580EXII work as a slave from it?

Will the 430ex work with it?????

And the older 550EX's so presumably the 420EX's too.

Bob

And the original question,...with the Sigma, genuinely?!!

To quote from another site

The Sigma and all the Canons except the 220 EX and 380 EX can be used in a infrared wireless (w/l) master/slave setup (the 420 EX as slave only) and are compatible with Canon's wireless transmitter ST-E2.
