Hi,
I would like to see what Canon owners have to say? I keep hearing about the "Nikon holy trinity" but what does Canon have to offer? I have:
Nikon D90
Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRI
Nikon 24-70 2.8
Tokina 11-16 2.6
Nikon TC 1.4
Nikon TC 2.0 III
SB800

What would be the Canon equivalent?

Thanks for any info :)

Funnly enough....

Canon 70-200 2.8 IS
Canon 24-70mm L
Canon 17-40mm L

going on FF assume.

Of coruse loads of great primes.

16-35mm L
580 EXII speedlite
canon 70-200 IS II

How do you define "best" lenses?

For instance I could say:
* EF 200mm f/2 L IS USM
* TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II
* EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM

but I might not be defining "best" in the same way as you...

70-200mm 2.8 IS
24-70mm
24.105mm
Nifty Fifty

All used on a 5d Mkll and 1D Mklll

Thanks for the link, I heard canon was cheaper than nikon maybe I was wrong?! Lol

lenses that stand out for sharpness etc are

70-200 f4 IS
70-200 f2.8 IS mk2
135 f2.0
200 f2.0

Zooms? Phah!

If you're going to take a picture, take it with a prime  My most used lenses are primes and my least used lenses are Canons.

I tried the rest and ended up with the best :) I am well happy with the quality of mine and they are good

canon 400 f2.8L
canon 300 f2.8L
canon 135 f2L
canon 85 f1.8
Canon 50 f1.8
canon 35 f2

Oh and a zoom canon 17-40L

As soona s I am sorted wiht the 24-70 f2.8 I recently purchased then the 17-40, and 85 are going. but i cant bare to part wiht the 35mm its just too good :)

Those are list prices though. Canon is generally cheaper than Nikon who work on the reasuringly expensive model:lol:

The most recent telephoto primes from Canon look expensive though they will come down (if anyone ever gets any stock) but if Nikon updated theirs I'd expect them to be even dearer.

For stills, there's negligible difference between comparable body and lens from either brand so I wouldn't worry too much about the grass being greener.

If you want stills and video though, Nikon have yet to demonstrate that they understand what consumers want let alone show they are capable of implementing it.

Canon has two Holy Trinities:

16-35L 2.8
24-70L 2.8
70-200L 2.8

17-40L 4
24-105L 4
70-200L 4

At the consumer end...

10-22
17-55 2.8 and 15-85
70-300

Overall Canon wins on lens choice, pretty much, and many of them are market leaders in terms of quality, and cheaper than Nikon counterparts. Nikon has lost the market share gains in DSLRs they've been making in the last couple of years, and now Canon is back in front. They have about 75% between them. Normal service resumed :D

^ Another holy trinity:

35L, 85L, 135L

The 70-200 2.8 is ii was voted best professional lens by TIPA recently and is the lens most wanted and loved it seems.

My choice would be

EF 50mm f1.8 (Nifty Fifty)
EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM

I would not say no to a 24-105L or 24-70L or 100L macro or a ...

Ultra wide on crop Sigma 10-20

Having had the nifty fifty I can understand why people mention it but the f1.4 version is better and the f1,2 is great, but lots of money.

I tried a 24-70, but prefer the 24-105, but that's personal choice.
70-200 f2.8 IS is a given, brilliant lens as is the 100-400. Such a fantastic lens and I'm not sure nikon has an equivilant.

On a crop camera, the 10-22 is a great lens.

Primes, I don't think the expensive 300mm,400mm,500mm,600mm and 800mm lenses can be beat. Let's not forget canon have lenses in it's range that nikon don't have, such as the 1200mm and the 5 time zoom macro.

Generally I doubt there's any difference in the equivalent lens in either range (you've just got to look at images produced), but canon does have a huge range across capabilities and price

Thanks for all the replies :) but loads of lenses to pick from. Will have to do a bit more reading.

Depends what you shoot but if you ignore widlife where FL is king the three walkabouts I would have on FF are 35L, 85L II and 135L

On a x1.6 crop I'd go for a 24L II, 50L and 135L combination.

All of the above are standout lenses and cane the zooms in just about every respect (ignoring versatility and IS and the extrordinary sharpness of the above-mentioned 70-200f2.8IS II).

Just my 2p worth.

on a crop id say

17-55mm 2.8

then it would be

70-200 f2.8 IS mk2
16-35mm 2.8

Canon's best lenses are easy to find - just look for the red L.

This is subjective. If you have an umlimited budget then fair do, if not, then it's about best bang for buck.

What I have.

50mm F1.8 (lovely but dont use it enough)
Canon 24-70 F2.8L (dreamy)
Canon 70-200 F4L (want the F2.8)

Other than the F2.8 70-200, want a 100mm macro, 300mm F2.8 and a 85mm. If I get drunk enough tonite may start shopping and see what turns up in the post next week.

the question is.. what are canons best lens.. not what are the best lens at x price.. thus not subjective at all :)

I'm a fan of the Canon 5200mm myself.

Doesn't quite balance as well as my other lenses though.

The best lens in the world isn't going to help you take better pictures if it's the wrong focal length/aperture for the subject you want to use it for.

I love my 70-200 but it's not a patch on the 24-70 when i need to be closer.

The question would be better phrased as What is the best lens for etc."

MP-E65

I have just bought one from the classifieds along with the twin flash and I don't even possess a Canon body. :cuckoo:

Is the correct answer. No other manufacturer has anything close.

Thanks for buying it - I was so tempted.

G'day Brendan, I think Canon has a wider range of lenses than Nikon at the moment, although that could change, but Nikon started making lenses for the digital market a long time after Canon. However, Nikon does have the edge when it come to compatability with their single mount system as opposed to Canon's three lens mounts. The advantage being that you can throw any Nikkor lens onto your camera no matter how old it is. I don't know too much about Nikon lenses because I use Canon, but the Nikon 'G' lenses are Nikon's professional range. ie Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S. The picture quality from these lenses is outstanding and equal to the Canon 'L' series professional lenses (the lenses with the red circle in the end)... Nikon have recently brought out a few other pro lenses, ie. the new 200 f/2 (which Canon has had for years, used to be the f/1.8), and now Canon has excelled further with the new 200-400mm with a built-in 1.4x tele-converter... very innovative... I think Sigma has a similar 200-500mm with built-in 2x priced at 28k....

They are all good, and I like the build quality of both Nikon and Canon pro lenses... image quality of all of these is excellent....

Cheers...

Why did you do that? :) I have both of those, and the MP-e is a very difficult lens to use I might add.....
