Canon1000D, 50D, 500D.

Does anyone here recommend/have opinions on the 30D?
Bearing in mind I'm starting out.Thanks.(and thanks Terry for that link)

It might be a little less 'noob friendly' than a newer entry level model, but it's still an excellent camera (and you've always got the excellent wealth of knowledge on this site to tap into if you aren't sure about anything). Less megapixels than new models, but you'll still be able to make fantastic quality large prints, 8 megapixels is easily enough for 99% of users.

It'll have a bigger viewfinder and faster continuous shooting than a newer entry level model as well.

Thanks. There's one in classifieds plus lens.
Wondered if it appears good value.

Also it'll be tougher than xxxD model.

You can't beat the solid feel of a Mg alloy body (though the extra weight might not be welcome for some)

In this confusing world of DSLRs I have these options at the moment :
-new 450D + kit lens
-new 500D body only
-new 550D body only
-used 40D as advertised here, without lens
-used 500D as advertised on here.
Very slow progress being made.

Any of those cameras will do the job and produce excellent photos. Just buy one of them and start taking photos...

Out of all the cameras you list, the 550d is the newest and probably has the best features.

First thing to do is eliminate anything that's out of your budget. Don't forget to allow for the cost of a lens for the body-only options, as well as memory card(s) and any other accessories you think you'll need.

Then as above, just buy what you feel happiest with. If you decide you want better at a later date, you can always sell up to help cover the cost of the upgrade.
