Canon

The 75-300 is not a great lens, if you're going to be on the touchline at games then you could probably get away with the 55-200 which gets great reviews, especially for the price. The body would certainly do to start as a hobby, you might want to check Camera Price Buster for prices, they're showing the 550D kit for another £30 cheaper.

BTW it's probably better to just list what the kit is rather than provide links as links can change and it's just one less thing for people to do when trying to help :D

The 550D is a great little camera. If my memory serves, the 75-300 is one of the worst lenses Canon makes. A 70-200 f4 is much better optically whether it has the reach you need, only you will know for sure.

The camera will cope but you may have an issue with FPS if shooting action.

The lens, well, it's a basic Canon lens that is fine when stopped down (f8 onwards) and is available much cheaper than in the link you posted (on ebay they go fron £50 to £120).

I would personally recommend the Canon 55-250mm IS which offers brilliant picture quality for the price.

Warehouse express does a 550D twin lens kit here for less than both above.

However, the 55-250mm is available for about £130 on the bay of eeeeees :)

Forget the 75-300 and go for the 55-250, it's a far better lens.

Really in a situation, i've got roughly £900 to spend on a camera and lens.

No idea what to get.

If you are looking for a 2nd hand body and a 2nd hand lens, you should be able to get a decent 550D and a 70-200 f4 non IS for about £800+.

Personally I wouldn't go for 60D just because I don't like the swivel scree, I wouldn't go for 500D too because it is not a 'real' upgrade from 450D and you will be better of with 550D which is not too pricey now. If you do want more review though, do read up on the cameras on dpreview website. I do find their review useful and unbias. :)

... you will be better of with 550D

Agree with that! The 550D is a great place to start.

To keep costs down on lenses look at either, Canon 55-200mm f4.5-5.6 or Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM. However f/5.6 may not be fast enough at the long end. As others have suggested seriously consider the Canon 70-200mm f4L USM. Although don't dismiss the third-party offerings (Sigma, Tamron, etc) for cheaper alternatives.

I'm afraid you'll need to do some digging around to find what's available, what's any good, what you can afford and most importantly, what meets your needs.

That is very expensive for that lens, you can get them on here or ebay a lot cheaper. Its fine as a starter lens to see what focal ranges you`ll most be using, if you buy it second hand you`ll get the same back when you come to sell it.

If your definitely planning on using it for sports you`d be better off spending the extra on a faster lens though, you can pick up the sigma 70-200mm f2.8 for around £400 second hand and i think the canon f4 goes for around the same.

Anyone recomend me with a camera and lens for approx 800-900?

Hi

The 550D you were thinking of in your first post is a great camera and the kit lens can be got for around £580 mark

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod1212.html

The 55-250IS lens is a cracker of a lens for the price and you'll get great results with it, can be got for around £160 mark

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod596.html

Still leaves money in the budget for memory cards, bag, maybe spare battery etc

Also the nifty fifty is worth a look and can be got for around £80

Good luck  ......
