Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM Autofocus Lens any good?

From what I've heard/ read (i.e. not from personal experience) there are better lenses out there. Depending what your budget is, and I guess it may be limited. You may want to take a look at the Sigma 70-300mm APO lens - lots of people on here like it and it goes for similar money. Have a look at the reviews on the camera, lens & acc forum.

Hi,

I wouldn't waste your money on it, ok it's cheap but there's a reason for that, as above the Sigma 70-300 APO is a much better buy if that is your budget limit.

This REVIEW tells all, check out the MTF figures for an idea as to the resolution power of the Canon at 300mm. Whilst THIS one of the Sigma is much better. After all it is usually the cente of the image that is the most important with telephoto's or longer zooms and the Sigma has the Canon beat hands down there.

The Canon might be cheap and easy but it's money wasted as they are hard to sell on as no-one wants them, where-as the Sigma is a little more sought after as a first zoom lens and can easily be sold on if upgrading.

thanks a lot guys, The canon lens do seem to 'look' nicer and more complex on the casing compared to the sigma ones but then its whats inside that counts.

I'll look for the sigma lens

Not all Canon Lenses are bad of course, just these "cheaper" zooms. I've just bought myself the Canon 70-300mm IS USM - a very good lens apparently. However at a cost of 280 ish new (with canon cashback)

Depends on how far you can stretch the budget!!

around £100 now, maybe a bit more after xmas when money is better. Maybe I should wait.

Hi

been one or two Sigma's for sale on here lately for around the £70 - £80 mark or less so keep an eye out in the For Sale threads, or put a post in the WANTED section.

In fact there is one just now, added yesterday HERE, might be worth a look.

NON APO version HERE as well.

Mike.

OOPs, still both crap anyway :D

Mike.

Agreed...but it is important to correctly portray the exact degree of crapiness.

This is a good time to come out of the closset and...no, I can't.....oh hell, why not......I bought one about 5 years ago.:(:cuckoo:

Aaaaah...good to get that off my chest after all these years.

Hi,

don't worry we can all makes mistakes, especially when you are in your teens , it's just some are easier to live with than others :D

Mike.

I think so
Borrowed one on hols, thought it was reasonable then got the sigma. Much better lens, don't waste your money on the canon

i mean either the canon or sigma

No the Sigma is fine, Bob and I meant the Canon 75-300 IS or NON IS versions.

If you read the posts above you will see that Bob and I were just discussing 2 versions of the same Canon Lens, sorry for any confusion.

That's why I posted the 2 Sigma's that are for sale in these very forums

The Sigma 70-300mm APO (make sure it's the APO version) is reasonably good, and you could easily get one second hand for under 100 quid. If you save up and spend more you will get a better lens, it depends how much you want one now, how much you're willing to spend etc. etc.

I have done quite a bit of research on this subject recently. I would say the "cheapest" one you should look at is the Sigma, followed by the Canon 70-300 IS USM (then if you've a bit more to spend again you could go to things like the Canon f4 L or sigma 70-200 f2.8 etc - but that's silly money compared to your original budget!

I decided personally to spend a little more and get the Canon 70-300mm IS USM for 280.

This is good advice, as I have just gotten the Canon 70-300 IS for my dad as he wanted more reach than his Canon 70 - 200 F4L gave him. HOWEVER if you are stuck with around a £100 budget then a used Sigma 70-300 APO is ideal, and if wanting to upgrade later then you won't lose that much on re-sale value. A quick search on the For Sale Forums here reveals that there have been about 9 for sale this year and all have sold bar two and one of them was only put up for sale yesterday, which goes to show A: how popular the lens is as a first purchase and B: How easy they are to sell on to first time buyers so to speak.
