For that money you could get the Canon in the links or the Sigma 70-300. Either can produce good photos especially when stopped down. The main enemy will be available light but good results can be achieved. I'd say get the Canon as I prefer to buy matching brand lenses if possible.

I'd go for the 55-250 for that money.
Snap. For that money you may be able to get one 2nd hand and they're really good lenses for the money, and the IS is a really useful feature to have, especially at the long end of the lens.

It would be very useful to people that might be able to help if you could post up the make/model of the lenses you're considering rather than hyperlinks to Ebay. You get more responses if you make it easier for the people you want to reply.. ;)

Dan, what do you want the lens for? is there a specific type of subject you have in mind?

im after a long lens for shooting motor racing mainly if that helps

can anyone recommend me any where else to look for lenses other than ebay aswell

I will also say go for the nifty two fifty, the EF-S 55-250, it is a great lens, I bought one when they first came out and have never regretted it.

Take a look at this thread on POTN: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=459569

It shows what can be done with this lens, you could pick up one of these from E-Bay from about £140.00.
