Hi everyone,

I have just got started in photography after buying a canon 450d. I have just started as a hobby and have an interest in street photography.

I would like some advice on the type of lenses that will produce the best results for street photography that are compatible with my camera. I have been thinking about a zoom lens and wondered if anyone has any thoughts on lenses with IS and quick shutter speed that might improve my pictures.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

cheers

Danny

In general, zoom lenses aren't very well suited for street photography. Zoom lenses are big, heavy and a bit "look at me", and the resulting images are often too narrow to catch the proper street look. For street photography, I'd rather reccommend something in the 35-50mm range.

Hi Danny,

With the 450D any Canon EF-S or EF lens will fit, there are older ones but would not have IS. Other 3rd party manufacturers such as Sigma (OS is there version of IS) and Tamron (VR is there version of IS) also do Canon fit lenses.

As for picking one for you, we would need your budget :).

Also street photography can look pretty cool with a super wide or wide angle lens.

I'd suggest the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II USM, but as said previously; it depends on budget! :)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the speedy replies. Something I have found with my very little experience is that I am not capturing enough of the image (images are too narrow) so a wide lens sounds like a good idea.

In terms of budget I would be looking to spend up to about £350.

any reccommendations on wide or zoom lenses would be great, also is the general opinion that for this type of photography I would be better off with a wide lens rather than a zoom???

Thanks

Danny

The 50mm f/1.8 is cheap (£80-100), very sharp, and very small. All big plusses for street photography.

If you're not so worried about size and want a zoom lens, the Sigma 10-20mm falls into your budget as a wide angle lens - and boy is it wide! (I think mine was £380 new at Castle Cameras in Salisbury, you can pick them up for around £300-350 used on these forums)

Each type of lens have their merit; the "standard" preferred type of lens for street photography seem to be around the 35mm - 50mm. But really, you can use what ever you like.

How about the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 II or Canon EF 24 f/2.8 USM? They are within your budget -ish and would be a joy for street photography, and other things.

Edit: I mean 50 f/1.4, not 1.8.

Super wide id say the Siggy 10-20mm 2nd hand for about £275. There is a Canon 10-22mm but it would be more exspensive at over £400.

If you want to go for the L Id say the 17-40mm I think that may be just over ** budget at £420 (I think). I have heard great reviews on the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 which would give you good results in lower light without bumping the ISO up so much.

The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens and IMO should be in any bag...... unless you can afford the 50mm 1.4.

You litterally have a load of options.

once again thanks for all the feedback and advice

the 50mm f/1.8 (nifty fifty) is a lens that is often recommended. Will this lens offer a wide enough perspective for street photography?

Cheers

Danny

Ok a 20mm prime is a fantastic street lens when you want to get buildings and surroundings as much as people, obviously if you wish to shoot people a 85mm f1,8 would be my choice.
