Just had a x2 delivered, i have put in on my 50D and 70-200mm f4 L (none is) and the auto focus does not work!! any idea's. is the extender knackered?
i know the lens becomes an F8 and the auto focus need 3 stops to work, but no matter what setting i put on the camera no auto focus. Any help please.

Only the xD series will auto focus on center spot at F8

or buy a 1D IV or one of the earleir ones as I know the IV will AF at f/8

If you want a TC that will AF at f8 on any Canon body then see if you can try and find a Kenko Pro300 DGX converter. I have a 1.4x one and I used it on my Canon 100-400 IS L and on all my Canon bodies (5 so far but not a 1D series) and I was able to retain AF on all the bodies but the lens registered as f8. AFAIK the 2x Kenko TC will also allow any body to AF up to f8 but I would suggest you borrow one to try before you buy one just to be on the safe side. I went for the Kenko after reading online that it would correctly report focal length and aperture and AF to f8, and it was compatible with 5 more of my lenses than the Canon version.

You can put a bit of tape over two contacts so that your camera dosn't know its there and then autofocus will work but you need good light/contrast otherwise it has trouble locking focus which is not good for your focus motor(this is why it's disabled). Google it and you can find out which contacts to cover. Worked fine on my 400mm f5.6 with a 1.4x but I've only tried it once. If not trade the 2x for a 1.4x which will work fine.

Careful trying to fool the lens to AF with the x2, sometimes this can damage the AF motor.
