I have had the Canon x2 Extender II for about 2 years, predominantly used with my Canon 100mm-400mm zoom.
I see that Canon have now produced a MkIII extender and wondered if I should upgrade.
(I figured I could probably sell the MkII, but it is a big layout financially, £400, and I wonder if the improvements in the MkIII are worth it?)
Anyone experience with both extenders?

I have been reading up on this because I'm in the market. If you have a mk11 keep it if your buying new your only option is the mk111 if your buying used buy the mk11 the difference is minimal. A couple are for sale in the classifieds but I haven't got the money :(

You would probably notice the difference on canon's prime lenses because that's the type of lens the TC's were predominantly manufactured for. As for whether it's worth the money, I've been impressed with the results from my MKII version on my 300mm f2.8

I even stacked the 1.4x and 2x TC together and was amazed at the results.

Thanks for the advice - superb images Pete.

How did you do with the 2x on the 100-400? I have been debating getting a 1.4 for a long time but I have been told it will not work on the 100-400

I don't find the lack of AF a problem when using the x2

I've got both versions and can only see a difference on a full frame body....the MkIII has better corners but even then they need looking at carefully.

Decision made then Bob - I'll stick with the MkII and put some money towards LEE ND Grad filters!!

Thanks everyone

a quick question to Pete, how do you stack your 1.4x and 2x? i have the mk2 1.4 and the mk3 2x but they dont fit or do they?

They do fit but only one way.. so that the the 1.4x is attached to the camera and the 2x between the 1.4x and the lens. The protruding front element of the 1.4x TC goes inside the 2x extender.

Both the 1.4x and the 2x extenders fit the 100-400mm but the AF works only with EOS bodies that can AF at f/8.

Or so they say! I have a Kenko 1.4x on my 100-400L, and, to my surprise, very rarely find the autofocus doesn't work - as long as there is a bit of contrast in the scene it works fine. That was on a 50D - I have only had my 7D a day so haven't had chance to try it yet, but I am sure it will be similar if not better.

Well it seems that the 2x mk3 is slight different, the 1.4 mk2 wont fit inside the rear seems to close in slightly so it cant be stacked :(

Only way to stack the version 3 TC's is to use a 12mm extension tube between them. You do lose AF though as it seems like the chip inside the extenders does not like stacking (which is probably the reason Canon made it physically impossible in the first place).
