Hi all, just signed up today, I am in Milton Keynes. Most of the time I use a Canon wrist strap E2 on my 5D with a 16-35 L series lens to take pics as a property photographer. I have had this strap about 2-3 years and never given the quality of it a second thought but (as with all straps) check it regularly. So imagine my surprise when it broke at the point where the webbing goes through the plate on the bottom that attaches it via a tripod screw to the camera, causing me to drop the whole kit. The camera was cosmetically damaged but functioned OK but the lens made horrid noises and I thought I shouldn't use it. Another lens worked OK with the camera and I went on to do a a whole days work. This retaining part on the E2 is made of fairly hefty plastic but not reinforced at all with metal so I must say it surprised me as I would have thought as every other attaching part is metal this means it's the weakest part in the 'chain' so to speak even if it is solid. It broke in 3 pieces. Now my actual problem, I have been trying to get Canon to admit some sort of responsibility, they say there is nothing wrong with the manufacturing or design process, the repairs are £347 but pushing them they first reduced it to £300 and now I have raised a complaint they will go to £250 but still not acknowledge that plastic to hold a heavy piece of kit is not good enough. They have also now had it for 5 weeks and want me to sign a waiver before they start the repair!! Basically what I'm asking has anyone else had a similar problem or can offer thoughts. Internet searches had not thrown up much info at all. many thanks, sorry it's a bit long winded!

Welcome to TP :)

You will never get them to admit any liability, on principle. It comes under consequential loss, which is a very risky area - God forbid, but say your camera fell on a baby and hit them in the eye or something equally unpleasant.

And on the other hand, they could well argue fair wear and tear as you've been swinging it around for three years with what is actually an unusually heavy camera/lens. A Black Rapid or similar sling-strap is a much better idea ;)

I can't see them admitting any liability here.

When you look at how the describe the E2 hand they say 'designed to add support and comfort to hand-holding a Canon SLR camera'

Now naturally I don't know what sort of instructions/warnings come with it, but I would probably expect them to say it is not actually designed to take the full weight of the camera, just to add support.

Is the plate a Canon item? I have several E2 straps but there's no additional hardware as they were designed for bodies that had integral loops or with the addition of a grip. If the tripod mount plate attachment is a 3rd party item then it's possible that it damaged the strap.

Pictures of this on Amazon show one end with a tripod socket point screw adaptor with the strap running through it.
