Currently shooting with a 5D/1, over the past lot of months I've been building up on some Canon glass; 50mm f/1.8 II, 85mm f/1.8, 70-200mm f/2.8 L (non IS).

Presently using a Canon 28-105mm ultrasonic f/3.5/4.5 as my only wide angle lens, but in the near future I fancy selling this and aiming/upgrading to something like;

16-35 f/2.8 L USM
17-40 f/4 L USM
24-70 f/2.8 L USM
or a fixed wide angle prime

Mainly to be used for general and landscape photography. I fancy keeping with Canon and hoping to afford L glass.

Any advice/experience greatly appreciated, thanks!

24-105 or 24-70 are probably the best of the lot, good range sharp and take 77mm filters.

Sadly 17-40 has awful corners up until f/11+ with uneven focal plane (all of them to be precise), and 16-35 is only marginally better. Good if you always shoot at f/16, not so great otherwise. I think the answer is Zeiss 21mm or Tokina 17-35mm when they get it ready.

But on the upside, any of these will be a huge upgrade from 28-105mm

Any Canon wide angle fixed primes worth looking at for a full-frame 5D/1? Nothing too wide, probably 17mm to 28mm would suit me etc.

Suggestions please..........?

I think the 17-40 and 5D make a great combination, but it is very wide.

If you went with primes perhaps the 28mm 1.8 as more of a walkaround lens and the Samyang 14mm 2.8 as an UWA? both those together would be 2/3rds the price of something like the 24mm and 35mm 1.4 L's.

bite the bullet and go ultra wide, something along the lines of 10-22, would be a learning curve to say the least!

Do not buy the 10-22 to use on a FF camera. The 17-40 will be a similar FoV on FF as 10-22 on a cropped sensor though.

If you want that bit of versatility that you imply then I'd go for the 24-70 perfect combination with your 70-200 wide enough for a great landscape, fast enough to use in most situations and with enough zoom to voer them as well.

24 1.4L is simply stunning treat yourself!

I just did. :D

Selling my 24-105L to help fund it - it's a nice 'walkabout' with useful range but it's just not fast enough for many things I shoot, even with IS - and I like to be able to have very shallow DOF.

I like my 17-40L but I may end up selling that too and saving for the 16-35 2.8.

My vote goes to the 16-35 f2.8 MK2.

My most used lens at present with the 24-70 in second place. If I had to sell one of them it would be the 24-70!

I have owned pretty much all of the lenses discussed above and have settled on the Canon 15mm fisheye, 16-35f2.8II and 24f1.4II combination which cover my wide angle needs for weddings and gigs.

IMHO, the 16-35II is a class act and makes a great walkabout on both FF and crop bodies.

Much prefer this to the 24-70, BTW.

Best of luck in your choices
