Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my camera kit and make the change from Sony to either Canon or Nikon kit.

Looking for a Full Frame Sensor, and was looking for advice from those of you that use Canon & Nikon. Dont want to turn this into a big debate on why one is better but looking for the Pros and Cons for the various manufacturers and recommendations for models, probably looking around the £1000 for a body so not top end models

Has anyone purchased any refurb kit form either manufacturer, we have bought some new Nikons at work via Nikon refurb on Amazon and made a massive saving

Thanks for any advice

I'd look at the lenses and flash systems. I doubt there will be that much difference though. Both manufacturers have some nice bodies and will also produce new exciting tech

not sure i can get a full fame body for around the £1000 mark though

not new one, but if you were scraping the rock bottom end the original 5D's are around £300-400. There are several more under £1k

yeah was thinking of looking at some or the manufacturer options for refurb kit

it all about how it feels for you go and try them see if the buttons are right and that you like the menu system. if it feels right then thats a long way to being right. either will do what you want its really personnel choice and don't settle on i will get used to it

You can get a mint 6D for under a grand too I reckon?

Have a go with both, choose the one you like to use best.

Honestly, it's down to personal preference. In the main, neither brand has any significant advantage over the other, although if you want 36MP on FF, the Nikon D800 is the only game in town.

You can get a brand new imported 6d for not much more than a grand. One of the best FF sensors out there to boot.

The main difference between the two is the ergonomics/controls. Some people have a strong preference for one or the other, and you'll have to handle a few to see which is more comfortable for you. Beyond that, it probably doesn't make much difference. They're both excellent systems.

New UK stock Nikon D7100. And you will have some money left over for some glass....

I have always been wary of importing electrical kit, i guess warranty claims have to be returned back to Hong Kong?

Why do they not get warranty in the UK?

can you recommend any good sites?

Wanted to go full frame and cant afford the sony option so looking at alternatives

Since your budget restricts you to s/h, then why not look at the Sony A850 / A900 - FF and within your budget?

It's all to do with territory licensing and territory sales, nothing more than that.

Digital rev and Panamoz are both pretty good. I've ordered from from Digital rev before with no issues. They are an advertiser here and have their own section.

Just a thought. Have you considered the Sony A7, you maybe able to use your current Sony lenses with an adapter???

I know little about the the A7 but there seems to be a established thread on the camera which maybe worth browsing.

I'd grab a 6D from Panamoz :) Well, I did actually :D
+1
Me too - love it as well! Bought mine a couple of weeks ago with the 24-105 lens. I am truly delighted.

In the spirit of equality, the other camera that I considered was the Nikon 610 which is a little more but not far off same price.

I opted for the Canon because I was drawn to its good performance at higher iso, and I was upgrading from an older Canon, so kinda familiar with the product.

Panoz state they are based in UK and offer a two year warranty on the 6D, price looks reasonable as well

They are Hong Kong based but might have a warehouse in UK.

They do promise to pay import fees etc though

I purchashed a Nikon D700 and under £1000 built like a tank!!! have had it out in all weathers which is one of the reasons for buying especially for shooting Landscapes, and does not miss a beat and delivers very nice images once you get it right in camera.

Mine came from HK and was delivered within a few days of order! It was a first time for me so I used paypal for extra security.

They are HK based but have a uk presence.

I had absolutely no issues with import costs at all.

I was toying with a 70d (A fine camera) but the reduced imported price allowed me to upscale to a full frame.

Go for it!

I don't think you can go wrong with either manufacturer - they boh have some great cameras and lenses that will turn out top-notch results in the right hands. For me it would come down to ergonomics, and in particular the fact that Nikon makes their lens mount and manual focus direction turn the opposite way from everyone else! I always find it tricky to change lenses no my Nikon gear having got so used to any other system, and I trip up over focussing regularly as well! I'd recommend you try them in a shop first before deciding.

Nikon D610. Brand new from Panamoz. £970 with BACS discount.

It's a UK company.. in name.... but they're not.. all stuff comes from HK. So what though? They offer a 2 year warranty. I just bought new gear from Panamoz. The amount you'll save over buying new UK stock will actually be more than it would cost to actually pay for a repair should it break. Nothing to lose. Many on here have used Panamoz's warranty service though, and reckon it's good.

Okay, been looking into this and deciding if i should change and think i am opting for either the Canon 6d or the Nikon 610 for studio work, so wondering what everyones views are on these cameras? what are the kit lenses like?

Looking at ordering from Panamoz.

thanks

I did the same as you a couple of years back. I was shooting with the Sony A77. Loved it but it was time to go full frame. I saved & saved for the A99 and when it finally was released i baulked at the cost when compared with the D700/D600 given the performance and features. Basically you just got much more for your money with the Nikon, even Canon.

So I bit the bullet and switched to Nikon. The main reason for choosing Nikon was that the D700 was and still is an amazing performer. You can definitely pick up one for < £1000. Especially from the Classifieds on this forum. In addition i found adjusting to Nikon slightly easier because it has the two dials in the same place as the Sony. Whereas Canon have them in different places. I basically found the ergonomics closer.

As for the 50mm lenses you just mentioned, save yourself the cash and go for the 50mm f/1.8g. I had it and shooting at f/1.4 is a PITA and the 1.8g is sharp as hell anyway at 1.8. The 1.4g is also slower to focus I believe.

In general terms the D is the older version of the lens so typically the optics are older so performance isn't as good as well as a noisy motor. The AFS lenses have silent motors.

have been swaying towards the D610 has the controls looked at bit more like the Sony, just reading up on it now.

I like to have a battery grip, at the moment the Nikon one is 219, just looking on ebay at they are about 60 for a non genuine grip, just wondering if there would be much difference?

Thanks

Ergonomics are very important and probably something you should look at in a bit more detail.

For example, imagine you have three identically-specified zoom lenses (e.g. 24-70mm f/2.8) from Sony, Canon and Nikon. Viewed from behind the camera:
  • the Canon rotates anticlockwise from 24 to 70mm and anticlockwise from MFD to infinity;
  • the Nikon rotates clockwise from 24mm to 70mm and clockwise from MFD to infinity;
  • the Sony rotates clockwise from 24mm to 70mm and anticlockwise from MFD to infinity.
Or, imagine you want to mount a lens on your camera. Viewed from the front:
  • the Canon mounts by locating the lens and rotating it clockwise;
  • the Nikon mounts by locating the lens and rotating it anticlockwise;
  • I don't know how the Sony works.
Or imagine you want to tweak the exposure whilst shooting. You look at the meter in the viewfinder:
  • the Canon reads from -2 stops on the left to +2 stops on the right;
  • the Nikon reads from +2 stops on the left to -2 stops on the right;
  • I don't know what the Sony does.
There are zillions of other similar differences too. Canon and Nikon seem to agree on almost nothing. So if this is the kind of thing that does your head in, then you'll probably want the system that works the most like the Sony you've been used to. (Unfortunately I don't know which that is.)

Whereabouts are you Carlo? Do you have any decent camera shops local that you can go and try some of these out?
