Canon v Sigma

I have recently bought a used Canon 550D & was going to buy the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS........£159 as my first telephoto lens but today I saw that one of the bank holiday offers in Jacobs is Sigma 50-200mm f4-5.6 DC OS HSM EOS......... £99

Apart from the 50mm they are similar spec but which is the better lens & which one should I go for, is it worth paying the extra £60 for the Canon lens or shall I plump for the Sigma & save myself some money?

The Canon is a gem of a lens and can be picked up for about £120 2nd hand. Dunno about the Sigma but any I've had I;ve never been 100% happy with.

Recently Sigma are making some very nice lenses, way better than the Canon 'Kit' lenses... buy lenses with metal mounts, not plastic... (if you can afford)...

Try both before purchasing. I wouldn't expect a miracle from either one

The canon is supurb, very sharp and excellent 4 stop stabilisation.

It performs far better than some lenses costing 3 times as much.

Can't comment on the Sigma.

i have the canon 55-250 and love it a lot of my fav shots have been taken with that lens but i am selling it cos i have upgraded to a sigma 150-500
