Canon v Nikon

I am presently saving to buy my first DSLR and as a complete novice, I am not sure which of the two cameras I have settled on to go for. Canon 400D or Nikon D40X. The Nikon is slightly cheaper but I have read that it lacks an internal focus drive motor when using tele lens. The canon is slightly more expensive but seems to have a little more for the beginner. I will probably spend most of my time photographing coastal and landscapes but a little motorsport and wildlife will no doubt creep in. Which of these two excellent models offer better facilities to the novice with a view to expand lenses etc. I know it is each to their own, but am I on the right track to even consider these two units. All views very welcome :help:
 
I think you'd be better off with the 400D than D40, they aren't quite the same market.
so thats another vote for D80....lullz

I've been watching everybody else talking about this for several weeks, as I am imminently converting to digital having done an A level in photography several years ago with my trusty Canon EOS 300.

I went into my local Jessops and tried out both, eventually deciding on the 400d - I just found it felt more natural in my hand. A bloke standing next to me was doing exactly the same, and said that he preferred the Nikon. There really isn't a great deal in it, though it probably helped having a Canon in the past, I would feel a bit disloyal going to a Nikon now after my 300 served me so well!

It really doesn't matter which of these two cameras you go for. The thing which is most important in a DSLR IMHO is investing in a system which can provide lenses and accessories to meet your needs as your photographic horizons expand and which offers a range of bodies to deal with more abuse if your interests take you in that direction.

After a while, the biggest investment you make will be in lenses, and if you've backed the wrong horse, it becomes an expensive bitter lesson to learn to start over again with a different make.

Canon or Nikon and you can't really go wrong, it's entirely down to handling both and seeing which suits you. ;)
 
Those who know me know I can't resist a comment, so here goes...

Canon are fantastic, brill, superb cameras, lenses & associated accessories!!!

They are head & shoulders above all the competition IMO

And rightly deserve their...

"Coughs" Nikon "Coughs" Before they brought out the D40x i thought they had downsized to be honest. The D50 is much better than the D40 on the other hand the D40x is out ranking it now. What i suggest you do is go and try them out and see how they handle. The key to a good camera is that it feels right when you hold it.

Look, both are great cams, both have great features, just go and hold both and see which one you prefer. Its all about personal preference :)
 
In all honesty there isn't a great deal of difference between either brand, they're the main two competitors, but olympus are making a small dent into the DSLR market, as said, the main thing is that it's right for YOU, and no one else can make that decision for you. Just make sure you compare like for like cameras.
 
and the nikon will focus with a tele lens provided it has an internal motor . it does narrow it down to the newer/later lenses though .

Gaz I was in the same boat as you six weeks ago and plumped for the Nikon D40X, but I took forum members advice and went to Jessops and had a play with both.

In hindsight I wish I had forked out the extra bit of money and bought the D80, but the long haired general put a cap on my spends:lol:

thats really the best advice, decide on your budget and buy the one that feels best within budget - or go over budget and get the one that feels even better (like i did and got a d80)
no point spending £x00 on a camera you wont use much because it isnt comfy to hold / carry

as for the d40x dont worry about the internal motor, most lenses you would look at wont need it... IMHO its a better camera all round than the eos400d although there are a couple of minor features missing - auto bracketing is one that sticks in my mind - but again thats a minor issue many people never use it and can be done manually anyway
 
I dont think you would go far wrong with either I use canon and will stick with it as I would have to change the whole lot same as if someone had nixon, as has been said go to a good shop and ask to look touch feel both and go from there, also remember if one camera make is a bit cheaper then the other ask about the other kit you will need lens/flash batteries ect and compare the prices of these

The first DSLR I bought was a Canon 300D. The reasons I got it were:

1. My mates had Canons, so possibility of kit swapping and also some help.

2. As I was new, some of the items I would buy (lenses) would be second hand, and there were loads more Canon lenses about than Nikkon.

3. When you see pros out at footie matches, grand prixs etc, I noticed they were mostly using Canon.

4. The choice of cameras 3-4 years ago was pretty limited. It was the 300D for £850 or the 10D for £1200. Can't remember what the Nikkon models were. But it wasn't like now where you have a large second hand market of 300D, 350D, 10D, 20D etc with current and new models like 30D 40D 5D 400D etc.


I totally wouldnt buy anything now until after xmas, see what the sales bring, i think the 450D and new 5D are to be announced in Jan, so you could see prices of 400D fall.
 
Oh Oh, sounds like this has been aired before:shrug: sorry. I would firstly like to thank everyone for taking the time to offer their opinions and views, I really do find it very helpful. Budget is my first concern and I would love to be able go out and buy something that is top drawer quality, but not to be. Both the models I mention are just within the amount I can afford and it would seem, either are a great starter for someone like myself. I will go and view both models and see how they feel, but I must admit to swinging slightly towards the canon;). Thank you all for your help :clap:

No Need to appolgise this will / does get asked on a fairly regular basis, it does however give the Nikonites a chance to imagine that their "kit" is better than Canon :lol:
Seriously, Just try both and see how they feel, I believe though, and I stand to be corrected, that there is more of a range of / for Canon than the others?

True Cobra - but that's a bit like saying there's more versions of a Ford than a Rolls Royce so consider a Ford as you'll find one to suit - you will, but by comparison it'll be crap whichever you choose.

Nikon has a more limited range cos it's just a call act, IMO, you should have to complete a complex lifestyle form and apply to Nikon for consideration to be allowed to buy one!!!! :lol:



Truth is these days that now, more than ever, there are no duffers, buy anything you like and it'll be good

You may want to think about upgrading to a full frame (FF) sensor in a few years time as this may be better for your intended photography. Currently Canon have a big lead in FF (canon 1ds 1ds2 1ds3 and 5d) as Nikon have only just brought out their first FF camera, :thinking:thats not to say they cant catch up in the next few years:clap: - they may....:shrug:

Nikon or Canon eh! I've used (and still own) both Nikon & Canon SLR's but my last DSLR was a Fuji....what does that say! I don't really think there's a lot to choose between them- both make fine cameras and lenses (away from the budget ends of the ranges). If I were a pro sports photographer needing the very highest frame rates then I'd be in the Canon camp. Landscapes & portraits might steer me toward Nikon. If I were after ultimate colour rendition then maybe Fuji. If I already had a bunch of Pentax or Olympus lenses then I'd be going down that path.....
