To 90%+ of people it is just an 'in' joke and not at all serious. I made the decision on brand nearly 3 years ago and it was based on which body I liked back then (40D v D200) and which lenses (I loved the AFS105f2.8G) plus the Nikon flash system. I bought my wife a Nikon so she can use my lenses and then 2 of the kids for the same reason. If I were to change to Canon the amount of stuff I would have to change and lose money on would be silly. I just bought to camera I wanted and then the logical next step ie D700. Most people are in a similar position I would guess. There are people that make the switch both ways but it can get rather expensive so there would have to be a MAJOR reason to. My wife did have a Canon EOS 300v but only two cheap lenses and I had an IXUS500 so we were actually both on Canons. If I were to buy another p&s which I might very well do I think that the IXUS might be my choice again.

I bought my first DSLR April 09, and I went with a pentax Km, which came with 2 lenses from currys for £380 I think. At the time, I wasn't sure how much I would get into it, and couldn't justify say £600+ on equiv spec Canon / Nikon.

Of course....I got into it, and bought loads of lenses and a 2nd body, and as Darren mentions above, if I was to swap brands, the amount of stuff I would need to sell, would be too much a pain in the backside........

So though whilst people do jump ship, it's usually quite rare compared to the no of DSLR users....... There's not really a huge difference between similar specced Canon/Nikon/Pentax/Olympus in the amateur / prosumer market.

Mostly, the quality of any image is caused by the person using it.
 
Amazing that some people seem to take the whole Canon vs. Nikon thing so seriously... :cuckoo:

You are buying into a SYSTEM not just buying a camera, this is the thing to think about. Both Nikon and Canon will do exactly what you want (although of course Nikon is better :lol: <--- ;))
