Canon v Nikon for novice!

The last part was a joke. :) Although it is tempting sometimes with fanboys.

I thought it was, ;) BUT, if I ever give it a go i'll refer the recipient (& the magistrate) to your post! :D ;)

I've done it! I've made a purchase, I nearly forgot we have a currys nearby, and they have loads to hold over the shelf, so I held a few of interest, and made my decision. It was hard choosing though, there all very nice and if money was no problem I'd have one of each. I must say the Canon Powershot XS-50 has impressive looking spec, and think thats the camera I maybe should have purchased as a novice, and the zoom was amazing. However after carefull consideration, and the fact it seemed like a good deal, and felt comfortable in hand, so I choose this one.

Thank you all again for the help and advice, I've got this funny feeling I'll be asking more questions soon, lol.
Kind regards
Barney.

Yes can't wait, the batteries just finished charging and I've had a little go already, so far so good, bit confused at the moment as to what the max zoom on the 75-300mm, I believe the 18-55mm is x3 max zoom, could someone tell me what to expect from the 300mm please.

Zoom is the ratio between the two extremes of the focal length, so an 18-55mm is x3 (55/18), 75-300mm is x4 (300/75). It doesn't really have much meaning, in any practical day-to-day setting.

Thank you Alastair, that's much easier to understand, so that ratio applies to all lens then. apologies in advance for any further silly novice questions. I'll try to resist picking the cam up, and read the manual properly this time, lol ;-)

When I brought my 1st dslr the nikon was 200quid cheaper that the canon. That was about the only difference. The nikon range is more complicated than the canon as the number ranges dont make much sense and you have this issue with lens motors and so on but I love nikon now, and I love the 1.5x crop as apose to the canons 1.6x which is hard to accurately calculate.

I know more people shoot canon but I guess I just like to be different. And for me the nikons look better and have more character, I know that non of that makes a difference on how they perform but to be honest theres nothing in it now days
