Canon upgrade 1Dmk iv,5D mkiii,7D mkii and 1 Dx

Hi Tareq
I do mainly wildlife, people and landscapes. The 1d mkiv and 7d mkii are very close for me and i believe it comes down to the users preferences and in that the 1D edges it for me I had the one 7d mkii for 5 days to try out. I just preferred the feel of the mark 4 and I didn't feel the ISO capability was good enough on the mark 2. Plus to get a better balanced camera I would need the battery grip so it was with a heavy heart I sold the 1d mkiv and went down the 1 Dx route. What works for me may not for you.

Again, i said i wish if that 1D mkiv is still available as brand new then i will get that instead of 1D3 i have now or even 7D mkII, but i don't think i may find that 1D mkiv new nowadays maybe there is few in this world but very expensive than its original price or not much cheaper, in this case i better go with 1DX as its price is down nowadays but still high for me for just an upgrade, i don't think i can sell my 1D3 even with 30D to have a good price, but both cameras i can sell to have almost same price of 7D mkii or even slightly more, i just don't want to feel regret to dump my 1D mkiii for 7D mkii later, i had 1D mkiiN that i sold without heartbeat thinking as i already have 1Diii and i never use it when i bought 1DX too so i decided i will sell it immediately when i get any deal and i did.

......but only 7D2 is the latest best option as i see i can afford and serve me.
I'd see if you can borrow one first, Tareq. There are several 1Dx owners on here (myself included) who thought the same as you but have since sold their 7D2's. I'd try to make sure that it'll fulfill your needs before making the investment.

I don't have someone with this camera, and i can't judge by testing it in the store for just some snapshots there, i need a real test in field.

I will see if i can find someone with this camera locally, otherwise i don't have any choice.

I have been mulling over the same change tareq ,I tried out a few shots with my sons 7d2 the other day in perfect light ,and to be perfectly honest the detail in the photos was only slightly better than the 1d3 BUT the noise levels in the photos were a lot higher ,I know that I can shoot at silly ISO with the 1d3 ,so try to borrow or hire a 7d2 before buying and check out all aspects .

Ok, thank you very much!

I hope i can find someone with 7D2 to test it before i do the sale and regret it.

Hi Tareq
I have just handled another 7d mkii purchased a couple of weeks ago again it seemed OK after setting it up for another friend. I have a feeling more than a few of the earlier bodies
had issues. So as long as you don't need the higher ISO capability of the 1Dx I believe it should suit your needs
Regards
Richard

Well, to be honest, i will use 7D MarkII for sports things or related as a backup body to my 1DX, i use 2 mainly lenses in sports area, my 300 f2.8Is mk1 and 70-200 f2.8IS mkII, so i prefer to have 2 bodies with each lens than one body and swap lenses all the time, i may also use more lenses such as 24-105 or 16-35 for wife group portraits in sports area, 1DX can do the job but life will be easier for me with 2 bodies.

1D3 also a great camera and doing the job, but i feel that there is a big difference for me between 1DX and 1D3, and wanted a newer body not another 1DX that is fast camera too with fps and good high ISO, 1D4 is gone as brand new, i saw Samsung camera with 15fps, but i don't want to buy new system and new lenses, and i don't know how good is this Samsung in focus anyway, but when 7D mkii hit the market i felt maybe this is a temporary solution, i was going to ask in many photography forum websites about what is the highest ISO value i can go with 7D mkii without losing quality or having issues?...

I forgot to say, my 300 on my 1D3 is not doing much good, focus is fast but not as fast as 1DX, also not as sharp as on 1DX, 1DX saved my quality, so i felt like maybe my 1D3 is no longer at high performance, even my 1D2n wasn't much great after years and i sold it without regret, i really wish to test 7DmkII with my lenses to confirm if i need to upgrade or not, i didn't test my 70-200 mkii yet on 1D3, but if this is not as good or sharp as well then i think 7DmkII should do better for me with those lenses, newer body so it should perform high, or what do you think? also 7D2 has more crop factor than 1DX, that maybe will save some quality when i crop, i always crop my 1DX or say most of the time so i lose some pixels anyway.

I was going to shoot the moon with my 1DX + a lens + 1.4x TC and again with 1D3 + a lens only without TC and compare them and see how much details i see with 1D3 with crop or slight crop compared to 1DX, it is 10mp and an older camera, 7D2 has more crop and newer body shouldn't it be better quality if i crop less than what i do with 1DX o 1D3?

I know it is really difficult to look back from 1 series, i remember once when i bought 30D coming from 350D i felt it was a day and night, and because of 30D i was shocked to read that 1 series that time is way better, i was saying this 30D is really so amazing, how come that 1 series is more better than it, so i couldn't wait longer and saved money and bought my first 1 series, 1D MarkiiN, and,...... i didn't touch my 30D again for long time, i touched 30D again only for cleaning the dust or just doing few tests for some new members who are asking for cheap bodies, so i think 7D2 is a new generation that is one step ahead of x0D series and but one step below 1 series, i thought 7D mk1 was an upgrade to those 20D/30D,...../60D,70D ones, but sounds it has a place above those model but still below FF and 1 series.

I asked about letting 1D3 go and welcoming 7D2 in another forum, some highly known respected members there told me 1D4 is better than 7D2 in many areas but not all, but with 1D3 comparison that 7D2 will win in all areas or aspect, but here sounds members have another opinion, and i like to listen to all opinions and follow who are right or experienced enough than just members who are lucky gifted to try many bodies and give immediate judgment without giving more time and tests for true accurate final judgment.

Again, the comparison between 7D2 and 1D3 should be more clear than what i see and read, until now i didn't see much real comparison and thanks for one above, but it is with different lenses even one is better in AF speed, but it should have more tests than that, i do have misfocus shots with my 1D3 and 1DX too using EF 300mm f2.8IS, i don't know what was your shutter speed, so the shaky or blurry or misfocus could be more about user error than the gear, i am not new in photography and i need more evidence than just straight pics that may not give the final pictures, i may have better result with my 30D at average ISO using 300 2.8IS than my 1DX and 100-400, so i am still watching for more reviews and tests or whatever between 1D3 and 7D2.
