Trying to remove my tripod collar from the 100-400mm, it seems the inner thread which the screw section fits into came loose and is happily rattling inside. Repair estimate is c£84 (uneconomic according to Canon) - I could not open the screws even with jewelers tools to have a go myself.

So does anyone have any suggestion of a decent third party tripod ring for the 100-400mm. Have to say i'm not impressed as it is the first time in 4 years I have tried to do this:thumbsdown:

Sorry to hear of your problem but I am somewhat puzzled as to what happened to yours??? The collar is very straightforward to remove i.e. you just loosen it slightly more than required to allow the lens to rotate within it after aligning it/at the point in the rotation where you lift it off of the "fixed screws" in the lens body. In that you do not undo the locking screw completely.

No problem in moving it around but i wanted to take the collar off the lens which needed the unlocking screw undoing further. It would not undo far enough to allow the collar to be removed without actually fully undoing it - at which point the screw thread inside became dislodged and now is loose inside.

There is a small plate on the collar at this point, as there is for the tripod screw, and i thought it would just mean opening this and re inserting he thread but clearly not. Of course these screws are so small they are impossible to move.

Thanks
I have seen these - just wondered if anyone was using them??

Plenty of copies on eBay... around the £20 mark.

I see..................when I first took my collar off I wondered how the heck it would come off??? But for the record and forgive me if I state the obvious. There is a pair of alignment marks where the one on the collar and one on the lens barrel align and by the slight bit more loosening I mention means the collar lifts off of off the lens barrel without the need to completely undo the locking screw. Of course this is with the lens detached from the camera body ;)

It is when those marks are aligned there are small slots in the collar ring that with the extra tad or loosening clear the fixed screws in the barrel.

Did a quick Google to find an online "looksee" instruction page 11 in the lens manual here http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300003647/01/ef100-400f45-56lisusm-en.pdf hope that helps?

Hi

If the tripod mount is not usable now and potentially knackered, why not very carefully drill the heads off the screws, this should then allow the plate to come up and you can re-insert the screw thread, you can then glue the cover back on...

you could try to drill out the screw, but I suspect it maybe more trouble than it's worth as there so small.

Hope this is of help

Not sure how but it seemed to have got stuck on the screws so i could not even move it around as i had in the past - hence the attempt to 'lift' it off... mistake. But that said you think it would fully unscrew as the locking section is held in so it ain't going to be lost.

Thanks for the link:)

Having reread what you said the other thing that struck me was that Canon consider this this uneconomic to repair with current production lens.................if the nut the locking screw goes into is supposed to be "a captive nut" and it has failed and it could hardly be argued that even after 4 years it is mechanical wear I would have thought they could have sorted it more favourably???

Thanks - was also thinking of drilling straight through and inserting a different locking mechanism.

I'd be tempted initially to remove the cover, I suspect, it should then be a simple case of pushing the screw thread back - potentially, is the minimum of damage to the tripod ring...

Anyway, good luck and let us know how you get on - take some photos ?
