Canon Telecoverter advice

Hi folks.

Buying a 200mm f1.8 which I will also be looking for 1.4x and 2x tc. Given the age of the lens is 15 years, is there any benefit in performance in terms of af and sharpnesss with mark ii or mark iii v mark i versions with lenses this old?

Excuse the question, rather have advice from those with experience of this.

I don't know if the age of the lens will make any difference to the AF and IQ with either converter. I have a 2x MkIII and I get some great shots when using it with a 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII. From what I've seen the MkIII is marginally better overall than the MkII so if you can find a MkIII and a good price I'd go with that. However, I don't think there would be a great difference if you got a MkII.

Will it work?
I was surprised how many L lenses will no work with the teleconverters eg one of mine ( the 70-300L F4-5.6 IS USM) it is a recent 4 stop IS version, and that doesn't fit!

Plus I came across quite a few more 85mm F1.2L, and both of the new 24-70Ls

1.4II and I were almost identical apart from weather sealing. mk3 brought in more changes, so potentially it will be sharper and perhaps faster focusing. 2x is a bit different story. There were more significant updates in every version. I don't think you can go wrong with mk3s
