Anyone useing TC"s on L glass ? , if so is the Canon"s 1.4 TC a better option than Sigma/kenko models.

TIA

I tested all three at the same time. There was little or nothing to choose between the Canon and Kenko (Pro DG version). The Sigma IQ was fine but it gave a different colourcast to the others.

I use the Mk-I 1.4x TC the original model) on both my 70-200mm f/4L IS and 300mm f/4L IS lenses and it does a fine job. I once borrowed a Kenko and that also did a good job but, I was not able to do a side by side test.

I purchased my Canon TC on eBay and paid just a bit more than what a new Kenko cost.

I have been meaning to do a test contrasting the 70-200mm f/4L IS with 1.4x TC against my 300mm f/4L IS without an adapter. I will also test the 300mm f/4L IS with the 1.4x TC against the 400mm f/5.6L.

I realize that the focal lengths will not be the same (280mm vs. 300mm and 430mm vs. 400mm) however this should help in my decision whether to keep the 400mm f/5.6 or to sell it and rely on the 300mm with 1.4x TC added.

Thanks for the response , I recently aquirred a 300 f/4L ( non IS ) and wondered if it would be better partnered with the Canon TC rather than the Sigma 1.4 I already have , Dont mind selling it and buying the Canon if its worthwhile .

Based on the copies I had then you'll see a difference in colour....I assume it's due to an interaction between the lens and T/C coatings.

Thanks Bob thats the information I was looking for , I will sell the Sigma and partner the 300 with a Canon TC .

You're probably aware but there are two versions out there...original and MkII. Optically they're the same and the only differences are improved weather sealing and a darker internal barrel coating to reduce reflections when used with lenses having larger front elements.

Yes I was aware thanks Bob , there are several for sale on ebay at the moment original & Mk II , might put a wanted advert on here .
