I'm thinking of getting one soon, the problem is I have a 400D which it doesn't fit :gag:. As it's the only official remote like that (adjustable exposure length, timer etc.) I am thinking of converting it for use in a 400D after seeing this article. Anyone done this or have a third party version that does the same thing?

Something that has been confiusing me for a couple of days regarding this, it says a standard 2.5mm jack (like the ones at the end of headphones?) will fit, but they seem to go into the 'Video out' hole in the side of my 400D. Below that hole is the hole that looks like it should be the remote hole. Which one should it be? :shrug:
 
Just looked at my 400d , the video out is a 3.5 mm jack and the remote IS a 2.5mm.

:)
 
Ah yes, i'm being stupid, the jack on headphones is 3.5mm.:gag:

It is a very good remote and you will be able to make it work on your 400D;)
 
I'm hoping so. :)

Have you done the same mod? I'm a little worried about getting a dud remote then cutting off the end before I can test it, thus wasting myself £80 becuase I can't send it back. :( Other than that it looks pretty easy, just making it look neat will be the hard bit.
 
If you're not confident in your soldering ability or the functionality of the remote before you start then why not buy and extension cable and perform the plug conversion on that instead?

Why don't you get a convertor jack to take it down to 2.5mm?
 
What exactly does this remote give you that the "standard" 400D one does then? Was contemplating getting a remote but now wondering if this is worth the extra.

I didn't realise they do extension cables, I'll have a look into it.:)

I am confident with soldering and basic electricals, I just have issues with neatness.:gag:

The TC-80N3 does the same things as the standard £30 remotes but also lets you automate timelapse/continuous shooting. It lets you choose the exposure length, time between shots and the number of shots so you can just set it up, for example, to shoot the stars then leave it for an hour, then when you come back you have 30 two minute shots in your memory card.:)
 
Or save your self a fortune and get a 3rd party version already set for the 350d/400d models :D

try maplins or ebay, will have a butchers now....watch this space :suspect:

I don't think the TC-80N3 has a jack plug on the cord. It's usually sold for the 5/10/20/30D series so has the small 3 pin moulded connector. It is one of these extension leads that you need and then cut of the camera end plug so that you still have the 3 pin socket for the remote but can fit a jack plug on the other end.

I'm pretty certain that's the score.....

Agreed, Yup the TC-80N3 has the moulded canon 3pin plug on the end and you would have chop it off!

The link i posted earlier is designed for the 400d etc.

Yeah, the plug for the 30D etc. is a non standard one from the looks of the images unfortunately. The extension lead is still something I'll look into though, that will save me the worry of having to cut the actual chord.

CScottMcQueen I saw those third party remotes but didn't know if they are any good, do you have one?:)

No, but looking into getting the version for the 1d etc, I dont see the benefit in getting a genuine canon one in this instance as its basically only a switch. :)
